OBDII code reader vs OBDII dongle and phone app?

Apologies if this has been discussed before but does anybody have first hand experience with these and therefore offer any suggestion as to which of the many many options out there a) work and b) work properly?

...but I'm a cynic and debate whether a fivers worth of dongle and an app on my phone app will be on a par with a basic bespoke code reader? Granted don't need anything too complex but being able to monitor what's doing what along with being able to pull DTCs would be good.

Any thoughts or is it better to spend a few more quid and get something like this?
