Afternoon all, just have a query regarding a VIC check. I am thinking of buying a Golf R32 that is Cat C. It is much cheaper obviously and I have seen the car and the quality of the repairs. The seller has also provided me with photos of the damage to the rear. I took my stepdad with me and he's happy with the repair. It is a private seller (seems a bit of a trader) and hasnt had a VIC check. Is it stupid for me to even consider buying the car without this? The chassis all adds up with the reg etc. For the record its a 57 reg done 60k with 2 owners and Full VW History of £6500

It's worth an awful lot less without the VIC than with, the bloke selling surely knows this. Therefore you have to ask yourself why he hasn't spent £40 on the VIC.

Ask him to VIC it, if it passes and the repairs are good then purchase it.

If it doesn't pass you know you've avoided a headache!

He's already started dragging his heels. Find the whole situation a bit strange as the repair seems to be a Very good standard, myself and my stepdad both work in the trade and couldn't really fault it but he's still just wants to sell it as seen!

The VIC check only checks the car is the same one that was damaged, nothing else, no reason for the seller not to get it done

As above VIC is nothing more than an identity check, you should be able to do it yourself do a bit of research on it. Its a good sign if they have pics of damage and repair.

There's one good reason not to get it done.

Not quite, the inspector CAN issue a prohibition notice if he/she spots a defect that is likely to make the vehicle dangerous to drive.

If the seller is reluctant to pay the £41 for a VIC check then it would set alarm bells off in my head, either the car won't pass the identity check as it wasn't the one that was written off, or the car has a major defect.
