I mean you won't have a tax disc stuck in your window according to the BBC news story.

Yes, in fact I'd already read the article on the Beeb. So is it not happening?

You're getting the wrong end of the stick, it's a badly worded post and title.

I think he should have called it:

The end of tax discs?

Looks like it CLICKY(add link)

I reckon that's not a bad idea at all.

I hope they set up an option that will allow you to set up an automatic payment every year so I don't have to remember to go online or go to a post office.

I wouldn't be too happy about it, going to direct debit will make it easier to ramp up costs over time, rather than in the bigger amount that would be more noticeable ....

given the amount of tax collected vie excise duty on fuel, the additional amount claimed via tax discs represents another beurocratic exercise that makes little sense at all to me...

I don't think you HAVE to go to DD they're just adding the facility to do so if you wish to pay in instalments. I get where you're coming from but it'll go up anyway and it's another 'Hobson's Choice' scenario if you want to keep driving. frown

They should do away with it completely and add a few pence to petrol. It is after all a "Road Fund" licence so it makes sense the more you use the more you pay.... Of course Govt. would have to lay off a couple of thousand PS admins if they simplified things!

Here's a novel idea. How about the government spending the money raised from road tax on the roads. I forget the figures, but the amount spent on the roads, is only a fraction of the money raised.

Don't believe a word of it, they done that some years ago here in Jersey, and the amount on duty
was far more that the road tax sum even if only doing half the normal annual mileage here of 6k.
They have made noises of re-introducing the road tax for the upkeep of the roads, they brainwashed the people
by stating the users of the gas guzzlers will be hit in the pockets

I would prefer if we could purchase by the month to save having to pay for one year when you may only want 10 months. I realise you can return the disc and get a refund but it is a hassle.

I have always thought the same as NormalWisdom it should be added to the cost of fuel, no one can then avoid paying it, if you do lots of miles you pay more tax, if you have a gas guzzler you pay more tax, it is the fairest system. If you only use a car occasionally why should you have to pay for 6 or 12 months tax. Plus the government could lay off hundreds of people saving millions what are they waiting for?

That would put the unemployment figures up and that's not politically correct.
Mr Balls would be doing even more shouting than he is now.

I think we should still have the disc, what about those who don't get spotted by police camera but could get caught parked up without one? Also, why the hell aren't we turning back at the ports foreign cars/trucks etc that don't pay it [and doubt they have insurance in many instances]? That I suppose would fuel the argument to put in on the price of petrol/diesel, but I'm loathed to give the government chance to put up fuel under any guise.
