What robust, sporty 2+2?
Discussion
Another topic got me thinking about a return to interesting cars, but as I now have three kids and live on a muddy single track road my criteria have become a bit more, er, agricultural robust...
Budget for this (currently hypothetical) change is tight, so £5k max but £2k would be preferable. It'll be a daily driver so it needs to be reliable, it'll live down a crappy road with muddy, hole filled passing places hence robust. And I'd prefer RWD and more than four cylinders, but can be swayed.
Basically I'm thinking some sort of rally car
I'd love a Merc SEC, but they're not exactly sporty. I'm a bit old for hot hatches, and have had an Impreza. The sensible option is a Forester Turbo, not least because we could squeeze all 5 of us into it when the Landy is off the road, but I'm struggling to get past the idea of a 944.
Finally, I'm sorry. What car topics are dull, and hypothetical ones even more tedious, but at least I'm not asking about something for a motorway commute.
PS if anyone can think of an interesting option that fits three kids in the back they'll receive more Internet beers than they could possibly know what to do with.

Having had a 560 SEC I can say that they are awesome but I really wouldn't recommend one given your requirements and budget. They are not sporty in any way, only have 4 seats, drink a spectacular amount of fuel, will rust if left with arches full of mud and whilst reliable can be an expensive pain if they go wrong. It would cost many thousands every year to run which from your budget I'm assuming is impractical. The forester turbo sounds like the obvious solution to your requirements though I've never tried one so can't personally comment. In fact most of the Subaru offerings might be ideal.

a 944 really isn't suitable as you well know.
Why not? (Sorry to seem combative, but you can't piss on my bonfire without giving me a reason.
)Also if you ask for a suitable car for travelling a muddy rutted lanes a 944 is not the most suitable.
However I have kids and have many 2 seater cars as I like them - but I recently had to buy a 4 seater to get them to school - E46 330 convertible - kids love it and it's a damn site more practical than a 944.
Sod it you might as well just buy an MX5.

Because if you were being reasonable and asking for suggestions of a daily driver for 3 kids a 944 does not come to mind (I've had one)

You and your bloody sensible reasoning Also if you ask for a suitable car for travelling a muddy rutted lanes a 944 is not the most suitable.

I just can't get excited about a 330, which is annoying as the whole 6 cylinder rwd thing is good.Bill said:

If you want to be mean try an RX7 FD - great car but totally unsuitable.

Someone did the Dakar in a Rolls once?
It may have looked like a Rolls Royce, but there were a few mods...http://www.carclassic.com/stock.asp?Ref=EF34&L...
