Sport button on vxr quickens steering and makes throttle more responsive so I presume it's the same

I'm sure it does something with the boost, like allowing the overboost to last longer.
ie, there's a set table for the turbo boost, and like a lot of turbos, when it is aiming for a boost level, they'll often overshoot a little giving a short bit of overboost.

It's the kind of thing that was originally a bug, but has become a feature as it gives you a short power boost for overtaking and acceleration.

The overboost has a short timer, and the sports button increases the length of the timer a bit.

There would probably be some other stuff too, but that's one of the features that is possible.

Not on a naturally aspirated engine, it's not.

(Sorry for the sarcasm but I think we can rule it out on this particular car).

basically it sounds a little more eager to rev, and lets the esp slip a bit more before cutting in.

If you hold the button down it switched ESP off completely

Yep, they are crap on fuel. real world mpg is mid 30's at best

I thought the sri was a turbo, in that case, it allows unlimited overboost, as much as the car can make!

As far as I know on the Astra, all it does is changes the throttle map. IE with sport mode off 50% throttle travel gives 50% power, with sport mode on 50% throttle gives 75% power.

There's nothing on the Astra's steering to change the 'speed' of the rack, and as far as I know it has hydraulic PAS, so the weight can't be changed like on an electrically assisted rack.

They did a 2.0T and a 1.6T but the 1.8 was NA.

Keeping the throttle pedal in the same position, raise the revs to about halfway around the clock and hold them, then press the button...

Made a bigger difference on the old mans' CDTi version but I'm sure all it did was reduce pedal travel...

There is a good chance it does nothing. I fitted a different module for £5 to my astra sxi when I had it as the blank button annoyed me. The button lit up etc but didn't do anything when pushed.

From memory of frequenting the astra forums the functionality, if it is actually programmed will speed up the throttle map giving the impression of more power but will make no difference if your foot is on the floor anyway.

If your car has the adjustable dampers fitted, then it also stiffens the suspension, but as this was quite costly as an option, few cars have it.

I drive a automatic version. All the sport button did was keep the auto box in permanent kickdown. Permanent red line, horrible.

I hired one of these in Opel guise while on holiday in Croatia, you could tell the difference between having the Sport button on and off. In off mode, it was sluggish, changed gear at random intervals and generally didnt go that quick.

In Sport mode it made more noise

This!

It just applies an offset to the variable resistance produced by the fly-by-wire throttle pedal. Not very sophisticated at all.
