Porsche 918 Spyder at Valencia: Time For Tea?

Monkey is out driving the 918; here's what we've got to look forward to

So Chris is out in Spain driving the Porsche 918 Spyder, a review we can't wait to bring you. Hopefully there will be some video as well. Until then, there's a Porsche advertorial from Valencia to whet the appetite.

As is the way with this kind of video, there's plenty of snappy editing and an appropriately dramatic instrumental soundtrack. However, and very importantly, each is there alongside the car rather than ahead of it.

Judging by these 90 seconds of film, the 918 will be more than worth its prolonged gestation period. A couple of onboard shots show it screaming towards 9,000rpm with real violence, and it seems to tackle a lap of Valencia with utter disdain. Clearly that 6:57 'ring time wasn't just for bragging rights...

See the video here.

This may explain why I saw a 918 driving into the the circuit when I went to see the Moto GP last month.

The 918 looks utterly amazing - from inital photo's/video's it looks better than the P1 and LF.

Can't wait for the comparison tests and to see these 3 cars photographed and video'd together.

They all look amazing and will no doubt all be amazing to drive.

Not that a comparison test will have any bearing on anyone buying any one of these [plus the P1 and LF are sold out for a start] but still, will be interesting to see which is perceived to be the best/most enjoyable, most usable or whatever. I suppose it will be intesting to see which is fastest in straight line and round a track also.

I thought the 918 looked uninspiring in earlier shots, particularly with the black/matt paint.

But my god, that looks like a cracking car. More organic and simpler than the other offerings.

And the speedo appears to jump by 15km/h and 20km/h increments when he puts his foot down eek

I've said it before and I'll say it again, for me this is the most exciting of the new hypercar trio. Clean cohesive looks, none of the fussiness of the LaFerrari or the genericness of the P1. I suspect when the other 2 are looking a bit dated in a few years, this will still look the best.

It has more than enough power, a 10k rpm tacho, sounds incredible, you just know the Porsche engineering will be absolutely top notch oh and lastly I'll also mention that CONFIRMED sub 7 minute Ring time as the cherry on top, none of this pussyfooting around that Mclaren and Ferrari seem to be playing at.

If I had the means to purchase any of the new hypercars, this would be at the top of my list.

That's nice, because if you ahd the means to purchase any of the new supercars, the Porsche is the only one you could still buy. The Laferrari sold out (499) before it was public, and the P1 (375) sold out last month.

rofl That's the first time I've heard someone describe the P1's looks as "generic". Now where's that specsavers pic? wink

Roll on the 918 vid.

I think any car that tops 210 miles an hour, does 0-60 in 2.6 seconds and yet quotes "96 mpg and 72g/km" emissions, deserves the Platinum Award for driving the proverbial horse and cart through the current emission regulations.

Full marks to Porsche for sticking it to the environmentalists. I bet Mark Webber is looking forward to his new company car next year!

I know there is a lot of love for the P1 (a lot of it seeming to stem from the fact that it's the home team) but the looks don't do anything for me I'm afraid. From some angles it looks like the kind of supercar someone designed for a computer game when they couldn't afford to pay for the licensed cars and from others a caricature of what a 5 year old thinks a supercar should look like. I admit it might look better in real life when you get a chance to appreciate some of the close up detail but the overall look of it is quiet bland, IMO of course smile

i might be mistaken, but the 918 in the video from the outside looks like its a fixed head coupe?

thought the spyder had a different roof line?

I know the rev counter view says spyder, just wondered if its the way it looks in the teaser?

I agree to my eyes the P1 is a bit of a mess whereas for me this is stunning and also looks fairly compact. The interior is also by far the nicest of the three and whilst it is a tad down on power compared to the other two it is still far too fast for an average human to deal with anyway so agree it would be the one I would buy smile

By Porsche reliability I presume that means the engine will randomly explode then...

It's soooo much nicer looking than that McLaren POS. I'm sure the McLaren is faster, better, has active aero, etc. etc. (yawn) but it's as about as exacting as a blancmange and looks a little like one too. I want a 918 and I want it now.
