GT-R vs 996 Turbo
Discussion
I am in a position to be able to purchase an 09 Nissan GTR or a late, good condition 996 Turbo.
The car will be a daily driver and do a 50 mile commute on dual carriage ways and motorways.
I'm not intending to use it on the track.
I am drawn to the GTR's performance but don't know if i can live with its styling.
I am also trying to be sensible and considering resale which of course points me in the direction of the 996.
Advice would be appreciated on running costs and which way you would be swayed?
Cheers

I am biased but the GT-R would get my vote.
I have driven a few 996 Turbos and they are great but feel a little dated compared to the GT-R. But on the other hand there is something to be said for the way the Turbo drives as its a little more involving.
Never had one issue with my GT-R mechanically and I tracked it regularly.

50 mile commute... is that daily?
GTR is definitely the best piece of machinery you can get for the money but wear and tear would be expensive for a 50 mile/day commute.

I did 30K miles in almost 3 years and the biggest cost is tires. I ended up loosing the factory run flats for R888's though, they don't last long.
Fluids and Brakes are a rip of at dealers but the aftermarket has that totally covered and its not bad at all.
I can only advise re the 996 Turbo.
Not cheap to keep especially if you don't do any DIY. In fact can be rather costly.
Don't buy a "late, nice" and presumably low mileage one, considering two factors:
You will rack up the mileage, so the relative depreciation will be rather great in your hands;
The faults that the car suffers from, not that they are catastrophic at all, start occurring from relatively low mileage.
So I would much rather buy one that has had recent work done than one which is low mileage but may have all these fixes pending. In reality many will recur with regularity, the main thing I am trying to get across is that low mileage does not give you any real benefits.

No I like the styling too & what's not to like regards its performance it's an awesome motor imo & I would love one, I like 911's also...the OP has a lovely decision to make.
No, I think they look immense too. The 996 turbo wouldn't get a look in, too long in the tooth now. GT-R is in a different league.Nedzilla said:
An 09 GTR will probably depreciate less than any 996 turbo.
Will it? The 996 might be the ginger stepchild, but there is still immense snobbery value attached to the Porsche badge. Personally, I think the 996 is the most undervalued (or possibly least overvalued) of 911 generations. torres del paine said:

I agree & the fact that the GTR originally re wrote the rule book on performance for such a relatively small outlay in comparision to the 911 deserves lots of credit imo, I appreciate the GTR gets criticised for its badge but its very difficult to argue against its capability & I personally love it to bits because it's a genuine giant slayer.
What he said.Although at that daily mileage, I would be in a diesel commuter and a weekend car.
