They're going to increase the speed limit for HGVs from 40mph to 50mph on the A9 single carriageway
Good idea?

It'll probably work quite well - 50mph for an artic means they'll run against their limiter at 52mph since it's close enough, and that will look like 58mph on most non-calibrated speedos. Chances are you never drive quicker than that on a single carriageway A-road anyway. The only issue is going to be Dozy Doris in her Jazz doing her pre-determined 42mph. It'll take an artic quite a long time to overtake her.

Do you have an HGV licence? Have you ever even ridden in an HGV? It is a nonsense to suggest that HGVs can drive on all A rods at 60mph.
If that's the case its a nonsense to suggest that all cars, motorcycles, cyclists, motorhomes etc can drive on all A roads at 60 too! An even bigger one to suggest they can drive on most B roads at 60mph too. It's a limit, not target!;) (although sometimes its a bleedin miracle if you can ever get anywhere near the limit!)8potdave said:
OT slightly, but I always thought restricting lorries to 50mph on ALL roads would be a good idea. It would stop all this irritating elephant racing which clogs up the roads (or at least reduce it).
Why would it? They all drive on their limiters now and it occurs all the time. Lower the limit and you'll just get elephant racing at slower speeds. Not all trucks are carrying the same weight at the same time and not all trucks have the same cab, engine and gearbox. 8potdave said:

thank you thank you thank you, you made me grin on a damp Sunday morning with your stupidityhonesty 50 or 56 what difference would it make to lorries over taking each other? there would always be a differential between the settings on lorry limiters. one might be set to 50 and another to 49.95
the only way to stop "elephant racing" is to ban hgv,s overtaking all together as it is on sections of the M42/A42
Remove the limiters. That way the drivers will have to concentrate on their driving more and not rely on an electronic nanny. This would also reduce elephant racing as overtakes could be completed quicker and safer.
40 tonnes on a single carriageway at 50mph... Bad idea me thinks. It's a LOT more kinetic energy that will go into a crash than at the present 40 limit.

It would also mean they don't need to speed through 30s and 40s to make their schedules (although no doubt the schedules would get stricter

I thought it was 56mph (90kph)?alot of big hauliers, maritime as an example set at 52mph for better fuel figures, the main cost in haulage.
i loved the post, "lets limit lorries to 50mph to stop elephant racing."
pmsl.
tbh, think the study on the a9 might throw up some interesting results.
technology on trucks and trailers has moved on in leaps and bounds over the years, and you'll be amazed how quick a fully freighted wagon can come to a controlled stopped when needs be.
if i'm in the wagon on an a road and stick to the 40 limit, on busy stretches its amazing how quick a line of traffic will form behind you, often leading to some really stupid and dangerous overtakes where people just don't want to sit behind a truck doing 40mph, and tbh i understand this. so would be interesting to see if there were any reduction in accident figures on this stretch of the a9.
i'm not local to the a9, but am i right in thinking its quite notorious as a high accident rate stretch of road.?
as for the well known topic of elephant racing, that often rears its ugly head, its always going to happen, when you get 2 idiot lorry drivers on the same stretch of road. please remember we are not all like this.
as mentioned above with a no overtaking ban for trucks on certain stretches, i.e m42/a42, m11, a1, etc the well known 2 lane only motorway/dual carriageway sections of road, i think a truck overtaking ban may help with the flow of traffic at peak times.
i have a job to do so certainly wouldn't want a blanket ban, but from say 6am-9am and 4-7pm i could see it may work well on the 2 lane stretches. but as for your average 3 lane motorway, the ban should not count, as there is the extra 3rd lane

should be 60... no need for differential speed limits
Do you have an HGV licence? Have you ever even ridden in an HGV? It is a nonsense to suggest that HGVs can drive on all A rods at 60mph.The brakes/tyres/suspension/steering etc on modern HGV's are hugely better than they were when the 40mph rule was introduced.
I don't see a reason why they shouldn't be allowed to sit at the 56mph limiter on an A road with the rest of the 60mph traffic, which would to a large extent negate the stupid queues of traffic and overtakes in desperation.
I regularly follow trucks late at night on A roads round here while they do 56mph in the absence of any Police and I have yet to see one leave the road in a fireball.
