Yes I mean wing and not door mirrors.

Many JDM cars have them. Why is that? Local taste? Legal requirement?

Are there any advantages to wing mirrors over door mirrors?

Visibility requirements in Japan mean they need to be able to see a certain point (or locus) to the side of the vehicle.

Most cars meet the requirement with a camera mounted in the door mirror rather than a wing mirror.

Chris, I only found out what it meant a year or two ago. I thought JDM MX5s were modified cars by a company called JDM.

You shouldn't be mocked for asking.

Back to the topic, why only Japan? Seems like a decent idea that hasn't caught on elsewhere. I guess there are no scuffed alloys on JDM cars.

I don't mind - I'll put it down to the poster's age.

like Wildcat45, I thought JDM was some kind of tuning company, hence the question...

Pedestrian safety probably, years ago most cars had wing mirrors on the wing.

I didn't know what JDM meant either... It's not the most obvious acronym. Face palm yourself please. With enthusiasm.

Googling "JDM car" returns the Japanese domestic market wikipedia page as the first result. There's no excuse for ignorance when the answer is just a google away.

Only heard the term last week when reading the Paul Walker thread. Thought it was some Max Power thing until I couldn't bear it any longer and hit Google biggrin

Or just ask the question on here, in the thread that is most relevant, as in say, this one?

I don't want to get involved in the facepalm photo but JDM doesn't just refer to cars. It covers all things that the Japanese keep to themselves. You get a lot of JDM watches.
