Just how far beyond the ability to drive any more do you have to be to crash through a closed barrier without noticing, up a lifting bridge, and then crash off the end of it?

Doesn't matter how good you are, if you live long enough you'll eventually reach the point where you're no longer safe and able. Yet there's absolutely nothing to stop you carrying on until one day you crash.

Utterly bizarre.

Come on, hasn't everyone been tempted to try a James Bond style jump over any of the opening bridges?

Could well be, bad driving is not necessarily due to age, as is demonstrated daily.

And dont forget strokes happen to young and old.

Young guy killed up here some years ago, a 34 year old male coming the other way, suffered a heart attack, crossed the carriageway into a head on. Both died.

A bloke in his mid to late seventies hit me the other day in a car park. Preemptively saw what was going to happen but I was too far forward to avoid it, he didn't either entertain checking either side of him before coming in the entrance. Even after the initial contact he carried on forward, dragging the whole side of his vehicle along my front bumper.

He was extremely apologetic, and his car came off significantly worse, but I was baffled at just how dangerously oblivious he was.
