Recommend a cheap lease deal please
Discussion
I'm thinking of changing my wife's car as I've been looking at some lease deals and they work out cheaper than her current car (that we own outright) by some margin when you include road tax, repairs to an old vehicle and fuel savings. Of course, it does mean down sizing but this isn't (too much of) a problem.
She needs a car to do circa 8k a year, take 2 young kids in the back but the bigger issue is the boot. It needs to be able to take a Labrador.
I've looked at the £99 Seat Mi deals or similar and am tempted but the boot really is too small for the dog. I'm guessing a fiesta sized car does have a bigger boot and would be ok as the dog only ever does short journeys in my wife's car. For longer journeys we use my BMW touring.
So, 8 to 9k per year, 5 doors, boot big enough for a dog, ANY BRAND OF CAR, it does not need to be PH acceptable as my wife doesn't care, best financial deal and would prefer to put as little down as possible.
Thanks in advance as I know I want my cake and to eat it.

Peugeot 307 SW 2.0 Auto.
Bad on tax, bad on fuel and starting to have a few things go wrong with it.
By my man maths I can save £230 a year on road tax and £600 on fuel (45mpg v 30mpg over 9k miles).
That's £830 a year, £70 a month to break even on a lease deal assuming no repairs for the current oldy which just won't happen so let's conservatively assume £300 a year on repairs and we are at £100/month.
Add to that depreciation saving by not owning a car - £500 a year? - and we have £140 to spend on a lease deal to make things even. This does of course exclude any initial payment.
I haven't included annual maintenance and consumables (tyres, brakes, etc) as these should balance each other off.
I accept the above is man maths but off the top of my head, it looks about right to me.

Was in the same boat as you. I had a 2001 Focus 2.0 petrol, which was bad on fuel and starting to get pricey. So chopped it in for a Citroen C1 on lease, its working out cheaper so far. Mainly down to the decrease in fuel consumption. 30MPG compared to 55+MPG. The last two MOTs were both £250+, with various other repairs needed in between.
Tyres are pretty much half the price and free VED too. It was done purely as a money saving measure, but I detest the little thing and would rather have my old Focus back!
Ford always seem to have some pretty good lease deals on, they seem to be pretty flexible when it comes to changing cars mid contract, unlike Citroen!

Fiesta has a reasonable sized boot - may just about fit your needs.
1.6 TDCi or 1.0l Ecoboost probably the pick of the bunch. My father has a 1.6 TDCi model and averages 68mpg out of it (owned for 3 years). My mother has a 1.0l Ecoboost Focus estate which gets somewhere between 40 and 50mpg on average depending on journeys.
Problem is that even with the Fiesta you would need to put in £4700 to get down to a £157 a month PCP deal over 3 years at 9k per annum...
May be better off looking in the Korean direction for more cheapness. My Aygo is completely unsuitable for your needs but is costing me £158 with 1k up front over 3 years at 15k pa.
Definitely look for stuff offering 0%. I think Toyota have just ended their 0% scheme for this year, does make a big difference. The Fiesta mentioned above is 6.9%!

Boring as sin but.....
Vauxhall corsa 1.0 Ecoflex/Energy 5 door:
£1.5k down
£150-£160pm for 60 months 0%
Lifetime/100k mile warranty
You own it at the end of the 5 years and can continue to run it to 100k miles/until it breaks safe in the knowledge of the warranty - you have something that you own at the end of the period?

ETA: 3 door is cheaper but probably more humane in the 5 considering the child and dog requirment.

You could go all James May and get a Dacia. £166 inc vat, but think it's a fair bit bigger than a Fabia for the dog. A Fabia Estate could be a good option for that budget, but the normal one has a tiny boot.

It's not just the size of the boot you have to worry about, but the height of the opening. Most small modern hatches have very high boot openings now that even the youngest, fittest Labradors would struggle to jump into. Would expect the Skoda and the Dacia to be better in that respect.
