Non fault accident - looking for advice.
Discussion
Needing a little help or advice here.
My son who is now 20, been driving for 3 years and has just earned his 3 years ncb.
As a result – he was hoping to have a new car before xmas to replace his 1.2 Corsa that he has owned since he was 17.
Decided on a Type R – basically because I don’t want to spend much of my time fixing the thing.
We have looked at a couple and the search was on-going.
Here’s where the problem starts.
Coming home from work on Friday whilst sitting at a traffic lit T-junction, a bus coming from the
slip road swung wide – smashed into the car in front of him then proceeded into the side of his Corsa.
At the time all appeared fine with drivers details being exchanged and witness names being exchanged also.
Yesterday Morning after contacting the bus company – again all appeared to be a formality and they mentioned they would
contact the driver in question an call back.
Later on yesterday – they called back and are now saying that after speaking to the driver – he claims to have only hit one car not two.
My son was 3 witnesses to the incident – two of his workmates who were in the car and driver of the other car involved.
Concerns being - he is fully comp on the Corsa so a call to his insurance company will sort (but I reckon write off) his car but with
him already paying a fair wack of his salary as insurance, done the hard work and earned his 3 years ncb - any increase in premiums or loading factor would not be appreciated since he is the innocent party here.
The police haven’t been informed yet – but not sure if this is the correct route to head down.
Also until this is sorted – I can’t see a Type R appearing on his drive.
Any advice on the best way forward and out of this mess?
Cheers

Speak to the other car that was hit and request a witness statement/ask if they would be prepared to provide one.
Ask for a copy of the CCTV recording.
If they still don't want to play ball contact an AMC (Europa have helped me out on a number of occasions now) and it should be resolved...
Unfortunately a non-fault claim will cause the insurance cost to rise - why i had to sell my 335i, despite insurance being £820 at 21 I had two people hit me and the renewal at 23 was set to be £2,500!!!! Nowhere could I find it less than £1,500 - you can't claim this cost back as although it WILL cost you more the insurers default would be 'use an insurer that doesn't load for this' (even if their quote is £20k per annum).

At the end of the day, whatever you do, his premiums will get loaded if you want to make a claim.
Even if non-fault? I had someone run into the back of me whilst I was stationanry. On my record as a non-fault £0 loss claim - I was assured it wouldn't impact my premium and come renewal, it didn't.
He does have the names and contact details for the witnesses.
Also has photos of the damage to his Corsa.
That's a good call asking for the CCTV footage - he is due to call the bus company again today to ask if they are any further forward after speaking to the driver (again) last night.
The car is only worth £1200 (03 plate 1.2 Sxi Corsa) - crap thing being in that has spent the last 18 months saving for the Type R and just before the purchase is made - this goes and happens.

seHe's making a claim regardless.
Speak to bus company. Tell them you have photo's (you do I hope), - take some more showing damage. Tell them there were 2 passengers in the car who all saw and felt the side of the car get a thoroughly good wack + the other driver as a witness.
Point out that unless they accept liability immediately you will instruct an accident management company who have the expertise to fight companies who do not accept responsibilities for their drivers actions.
Hopefully they will then decide to stop messing about,as they will not want an AMC involved.

seI had a non-fault accident in August. Someone went into the back of me on the M25. When I called my insurer, they said I could notify of the accident but make my claim against the other person's insurance to repair my vehicle. In that case, there is no loss of claims in my name, only a notification of an accident.
Your son should ensure that any claim he makes isn't on his insurance but on the other's insurance. When he runs a quote on the Type-R, he can say he has 3 years NCB but also a recent non-fault accident. I've been told that it is at the discretion of the insurer whether they honor the NCB or not.
When I ran a quote recently, no changes in price were made to my account. For the record, I'm 30 year old male driving a 130i with 2 years NCB.

Unfortunately it's a "no claims" bonus and not a "no fault" bonus.
Even if he tries to keep it from insurers the central accident record database will have a record that his vehicle was involved in the 3-way incident. The terms of his policy will almost certainly say insurers must be informed of all "incidents" whether or not it results in a claim. Future insurance premiums may be affected but it's not worth the risk of keeping quiet. [Might be different if he'd just scraped the gate-post at home....]

Here's a photo of the Corsa.
It all in doesn't look too bad however going by the noise the car is now making - the wheel took most of the hit.
The bumper has dropped and the wing leading edge gap has opened.
Car is still driving - I just don't know for how much longer!
There has been some good positive comments posted so far - thanks for that.
He is planning on phoning the bus company this afternoon and I hope he does so in a far more positive mind and won't get palmed off with any old excuse again.

We had a non fault accident and our Corsa was written off as a result . The insurance company has said out future premiums will be affected because we mad a claim , even a non fault fully paid by the other insurer claim .
The easiest way to see how much extra you'll be paying is to do an online comparison using your details without the claim and then the same with the claim added .
In our case it added about 10% to the price and reason the insurance gave was we might be driving when it was busy and therefore more of a risk . Living in rural Dorset that suggestion of busy was laughable .

Use a different house number and false name but the same street and postcode, NOT your own (or your son's) personal details. He wants to keep his head down and not be seen to be getting quotes on a car he plans to buy on a "just in case" basis in terms of both "had an accident" as well as "got 3 years' NCB and not had an accident" at this stage as all requests/info supplied are logged
.

.
Worst case, how much is his current cross insurance? How much is type R with his no claims intact. How much is it withe then accident declared ? The difference is the risk of it going wrong. BUT, bus did hit him, they should pay for damaged. Did your lad h
Get the driver details at the scene, ie name of driver, etc what about buss passengers? If he got the drivers name and details as bus company how he'd have this unless the driver told him at the scene having smashed his car?

Might be worth getting the bus company to pay to fix it away from insurance. Doesn't look like it would cost much It all in doesn't look too bad however going by the noise the car is now making - the wheel took most of the hit.

Sitting last night thinking about the value of the Corsa (with and without the damage) and the value of his NCB.
Thoughts being the NCB is worth more than the Corsa meaning just write it off as a bad experience and move on.
Just as this was going through my head - up pops an add on telly for one of these 'Motoring Accident Solicitors' – no win no fee.
Thinking my son has done nothing at all wrong here, the owner of the bus company is not returning calls or emails claiming his drive
only hit one car despite my son has video evidence of the bus driver claiming liability (filmed by the other drivers wife) and
photos of the bus embedded into the side of both cars.
It just goes against the grain that the bus driver can deny all involvement and think he can walk away from it.
Believe my son popped into the Police last night to report the incident – I will speak to him this morning and see what they said.
