I am 22, have held a license for 4 years and finally in a position to get on the road.

I want something with character, a easy to maintain classic that wont break down (is there such a thing?).

Was looking at Mercedes w123, Fiesta xr2, volvo's.

How does classic insurance work if i havent been driving? And how old does the car have to be?

Any input would be helpful. I want a car with character more than anything.

Easiest thing to do re insurance is to contact some companies yourself.

They will all have different policies on age of car, whether they will cover you or not.

My 924s had character in spades, 2.5 4 pot up front, gearbox in the rear and rwd, along with a low driving position, decent box and good turn-in it was a laugh!

The pop up headlights, ignition that liked to freeze and the fact loads of people gave a cheeky wave when they see it and small kids point gives it a semblance of character...helps if its red smile

normally proper classic policies are for second cars, so probably wont be much good for you. You may find the right older car will have fairly low insurance ratings anyway.

As for recommendations, that's a tough one, I personally like Eighties metal, 924/944 Porsches are great, the former being a real bargain and fairly mechanically simple. Old BMWs are dead reliable and good to work on but can be rusty and some models really attract a premium.

A good or possibly terrible idea (depending on your perspective!) is to go on ebay classic cars section put a max value of say £2000 and see what appears!

Also the classifieds on the retro rides forum is a good place to peruse.

As a new driver without another car classic insurance isn't going to be an easy find.

Regards the car anything late eighties or early nineties should be reasonably mechanically reliable but possibly suffering from tin worm.

My 924s had character too,an efficient, modern German character, could never gel with it despite its capabilities.

O.p,under 25 and as an only car you will struggle to get a classic policy on much bar a Moggy Minor, theyve really tightened up recently.

Incidentally a Minor would be a very practical option tho id go for a good 4 pot Capri instead if poss.

On the classic policy point I had the 924s on a classic policy as my only car at 23 - £550 with classicline although mileage was capped at 5k

This was with 2 non-fault accidents, 3 points etc declared.

924 is a good call. Cheap and very cheerful.

Whatever you get, I think your biggest problem will be rust. I suggest an E30 325i
