I bought a new car last week that my current insurers wouldn't insure me on, I phoned them and they said I could cancel my cover for free as it was their fault and that I just had to phone when I'd sold my old car.

I switched to Admiral for my new car and on my quotation I stated that I had 2 years NCB 'driving this or a previous car'. All fine, even rang Admiral up to go through my quote and they didn't question me at all on my NCB. Then a few days ago I had a text saying I had to send my NCB to them within 14 days which I did. I had to give them the previous policy number, vehicle make and model, etc. Sent through fine, haven't heard anything back at all.

Then I've just read something on here actually that got me worried what I've done is wrong so did some more Googling. It seems to be that I can't have NCB on two cars at the same time so that I'm technically breaking the law and could void my insurance? Am I right in thinking this only applies while I'm in possession of my old car still? I plan to auction it tomorrow but I'm really quite worried now that I'm voiding my policy in some way and that Admiral are going to turn around and say I don't have any NCB at all as it's being used on my old car.

Does this make sense? Can anybody help? I don't really want to call them directly incase they haven't realised the situation but I don't want to find out in a few months time that my quotation is wrong and that I have to start from 0 NCB again because I cocked up...

Have you cancelled your old policy? Because it sounds like you have?

If you have cancelled your old policy with your old insurer, then taken out a new policy with your new insurer, then you're not doing anything wrong, as you do not have two policies at once.

No I currently still have my old policy until my car is sold (which will happen at the auction tomorrow hopefully). Will I be alright so long as I don't have an accident between now and tomorrow? Or have I cocked up because my policies have overlapped?

Just move it on as quick as possible and cancel the old policy. Some insurers will apply a NCB to two cars if both are insured with them..

I'd say for a small overlap like yours it wont be a drama.

If your worried you can ring your old insurer, explain it to them and ask if they can change the NCD status to "mirrored" assuming you are the only driver of both cars (only one can be on the road at any one time).

The new insurer might charge you full price till the other policy is cancelled. But if its only for a few days then it shouldn't amount to much.
Phone them and clarify the situation.
