In fact, according to Wikipedia, one of the most secure places in the entire world. hehe

If you aren't aware of where I'm talking about, today I left the confines of Essex and travelled to Derby (expected it to be grim and Northern, but was actually quite pleasant wink), where I parked in a multi-storey car park that can lay claim to the above descriptions. It's known as Bold Lane and I've never seen anywhere quite like it: apparently there's not been a single recorded instance of car crime due to the (very smart) design. Being a loser, I wanted to know more and so Googled it and found the following document: http://extra.shu.ac.uk/dac/parksafe.pdf

Why-oh-why are there not more places like this?! I would happily pay a premium for it everywhere I went! My only criticism was the entry and exit points were the usual fairly tight affair, flanked with alloy wheel-munching kerb stones.

I even took some pictures for those who may be car park enthusiasts. laugh

How to do things correctly (they guarantee no car crime):

The sensor in the middle of each space that detects the smallest unauthorised vehicle movements:

Look at the size of the bays! No door dents here.

Not so bad up here is it. My friend parks at Bold Lane a lot, I however have a stty car so just park in the assembly rooms where the tramps wait next to the parking ticket machine and ask 'Have you got any change'

Did you see any of the foam barriers?

What measures would stop someone in a hoody scratching a key across your car as they walked past, and how has that never happened?

No car crime, ever?

Cannot believe that.

No, didn't see any of the foam barriers (seem like an excellent idea, though!), but most of the spaces seemed to be the massive ones like I parked in anyway, where you couldn't hit the car next to you with the door even if you tried.

Derby was nice - it has a hell of a lot of shops!

I did think that, but I guess there's a couple of reasons why it's (supposedly) not happened:

1. On foot, you can only gain access to the car park with a valid card ticket thing.

2. There's a stload of live monitored CCTV and all entry and exit points can be locked down, so perhaps those who are that way inclined just can't be arsed with it and decide to key a nice car that's parked somewhere else.

I've parked there a few times when I had the Elise, but now I have a scabby 3 series I stick it in the Assembly Rooms and save 50-odd pence per hour. There was some decent metal in there last time I used it and it probably is worth the extra though.

Such a sensible and obvious idea, and not too expensive to implement.

No, no, it's not even mine - I borrowed it for the day as I had two passengers and my car has an insufficient number of seats. hehe I'd much rather have been in a 'proper' Range Rover, but the little Posh Spice one remains a very nice way to cover 400 miles of foggy motorway. biggrin

I've parked there and although great for security, tight as a nats chuff to get out. Was holding my breath waiting for the alloy wheel scrape, which thankfully I avoided.
