Plate transfer taking longer than I thought.
Discussion
So far it has only been 12 working days since you actually posted the forms off to DVLA so not long at all. Times at the moment are varying but they ask for you to allow 2 weeks prior to contacting them about it. The last one that we done was sent away registered post on the 16th of November and documents came back on Monday of this week.
One thing that has changed, once you receive the V5 document back for the new car with the private plate showing, you can legally drive the car from that point regardless of whether the tax disc is back or not.

Boils my piss, this does.
You could walk into my nearest DVLA office (Worcester) and do a plate transfer over the counter. I drove down last week, only to find the office had been permanently closed. No mention of it on the website, with the office still listed as open. So, a 60 mile round trip wasted. I phoned the DVLA and they offered to give advice on completing the paperwork (which I already know how to complete). They then said that it would take up to 6 weeks to sign off the transfer. When I explained that I was selling the car with the plate on that evening, they helpfully advised me that they wouldn't recommend selling a car until the plate had been transferred!!!
Well, if it had been advertised on the DVLA website that the Worcester office was now closed and that I could no longer complete the transfer in 10 minutes, I would have maybe had the foresight to put the plate on retention (£20 more than a transfer) in advance of the sale.
Thankfully, I know the person I am selling my car to - had it been a stranger I could have potentially lost my plate.
But hey, the DVLA also informed me that the reason they were closing the offices was to make it more convenient for their customers!!!!
