E46 running issues

Hi all
Just picked up a wee 2003 316ti for the missus to run around in, having an issue with the car - seemingly randomly the car becomes very jumpy when driving, surging then falling back, very annoying when trying to pull away smoothly..
Anyway, in addition to this the car is revving itself when stationary and at idle:

Likely causes could be the MAF sensor, air leak maybe? I think the E46 has an idle control valve in there somewhere too
Has anybody had the same issue with their BMW? Or with another car?

Have a quick google of CVV failure.
My car did the same as yours a couple of times - when it was driving as well as stationary; took it for a damn good run (after panicking about the price and hassle of changing/deleting it) to heat everything up and burn it through properly and, touch wood, no problems since.

ThanksI have the idle issue, but none of the other symptoms of CVV failure just yet - I'll check the crankcase pressure just in case but right now I'm hoping it's just a split pipe somewhere, the car is low mileage for it's age so its not been used much...
I'm guessing it's the m43 engine? If so, it sounds like an air leak as has been suggested. Make sure you check the hose that goes from the back of the MAF sensor, under the top part of the intake manifold, to the fuel injector rail. Very similar symptoms to my e36 and that was the issue.

My Volvo is off the road at the moment and without suspension at the front so I had to take the BMW to London in the end...
Car behaved impeccably for the entire ~250 miles, no hint of the issue again
Might just chalk it up to it sitting on the dealer's forecourt for a while and just needing a good run to blast the cobwebs...
If it comes back I'll investigate further...

Bizarre
Nipped to the next town this morning and to the local stores this afternoon
The same issue cropped up again, but only on the journey to the store this afternoon, once stopped and restarted in the car park it was fine and ten minutes later it was fine on the drove home
Very odd, it's accompanied by a very disconcerting surge and stall while driving, very much like lack of fuel... Hopefully the missus won't get a fright being a new driver!!

I had an Alfa GTV with very occasional similar symptoms. A couple of times the engine light (IIRC emissions light) on the dash would come on and I'd get rough running... pull over and restart the engine and all was fine. Once it was idling at 2000rpm+ (this was a lovely Arese V6!). The next day it was fine and it never happened again.Nipped to the next town this morning and to the local stores this afternoon

Always thought the lambda sensor might be a bit dirty, but it didn't happen often enough to bother me.
