Looking at a new hatch - the zetec s Focus with the 182bhp engine is still on a 5 month delay build times, and I had a quick scan on the AlfaForums for used cars from my old 156 days.

Saw a few posts about the Giulietta - never considered it before as a "proper" Alfa. Anyways, there is a run-out Collezione special edition with a few bells and whistles before the facelift comes in.

List including options is around the 21k mark, but can be had new for under 17.

Would it be lunacy? I know they depreciate like nothing else etc but the starting price after discounts is pretty darn good. I think my big concern is in a couple of years when I want to change to a bigger family car my options would be limited with Alfa and I would just have to px into another brand.

Any advice welcome - the only engine I want is the 1.4multiair 170bhp - don't need a diesel and don't want any less power.

Tragically yes, wife has a mazda 2 which is the same body and platform and I can driveit for short periods but that's all. I'm too bloody tall to get comforable.

I really like them. My wife had one as a company car, albeit the 1.6 diesel. It covered 22k miles in a year without fault and was nice to drive (engine aside). It also felt a bit more 'special' than the usual company hacks she's had. Not sure I'd put my own money in one, but if the discount if big enough it might be worth it.

Yeah I think it s a bit different and the collezione has a contrasting roof and nice alloys

Just a question of gfv etc and all that. I'd never put 20k+ into one but under 17k and immediate delivery does appeal. .

IMO a run-out model will always suffer higher % depreciation than its replacement, despite the added extras. There's nothing quite like a new model to push down used values of the old one in a year's time.

I suspect you'd find better value in a 6 to 12 month old Giulietta if that's the model you want.

To be honest, unless it's a company car, buying any new hatch like this with your own money is rather lunacy. But in fairness the Alfa is no more loony than a Renault or Ford.

Sadly not a company car. I may look at leasing etc as well.

So all the hatches out there now... How many are leased, how many are company cars and how many are private pcp type purchases.

I have no idea and would be interested to know .

Sadly I think quite a few are likely private purchases. But I guess I'd just be too stubborn to buy a car of this type for this value. £17k can get you a heck of a lot of motorcar.

My boss has the 1.6 diesel Veloce and hasn't had a single fault in >60,000 miles in just over 2 years. Concidering it's a company car so is not treated with much mechanincal sympathy and is driven flat out up and down a dirt track to work most days there isn't a trim rattle to be heard.

They've come a long way since the 156 days...

It can, but it would likely be an out of warranty used car with huge performance rather than the slightly warm hatch for family duties and a station run that I need to be reliable and in warranty.

I know I could run an m3 for 10k but that's not my xcurrent requirement if you get me. I think also rigjt now it's cheaper in many cases to buy new over nearly new.

Saying that I appreciate all responses and am not dismissive. Advice is what I require and I am on the fence on getting one anyways.

If you like them and are happy with the deprecation factor and spending the cash buy it, they are nice cars for what they are.

It's a lovely looking car, inside feels truly special compared to other hatchbacks especially if you can get one with leather & sat nav.

1.4 is a good engine but felt very laggy to me in the Mito I drove, maybe the Giulietta is different.

Hi. Not trying to take your thread off topic it all, so I apologise. And it's purely your choice to choose what is right for you.

That said, there is no reason why you'd have to buy a high performance M3. And nobody "needs" a warranty. Remember a warranty doesn't mean something won't breakdown and that you won't be inconvenienced, all it means is that most likely you won't have to pay the repair bill. But you also need to remember you are paying heftily for the warranty in terms of depreciation. Usually way above what any realistic repairs are likely to cost.

And there are plenty of 3rd party warranty companies out there should you want the reassurance.

Just as an example.

£17k could get you:

BMW 135i M SPORT with BMW Performance Upgrades (2008)

ALFA ROMEO BRERA 3.2 V6 JTS S

JAGUAR XF 3.0 V6 Luxury

MITSUBISHI LANCER 2.0 GSR FQ-300

SUBARU WRX STI TYPE UK

SUBARU IMPREZA WRX S

Oh that lancer :-)

I will certainly look around, I am considering a good mk5 gti or cuprabut the cclassifieds aren't showing much that droves me wild. Leon interior is fairly cack and a lot of the gti 's are dog eared.

Used is definitely an option I won't discount so I appreciate this

A good one too.
It does put things in stark perspective and I find you fool yourself into wanting cars you are ambivalent about and seeing that list demotes them rapidly to a historic interest....
