I'm looking into putting wireless internet access into my fleet of cabs. The idea is that this may improve the connectivity of our despatch system if it is connected via something in the boot with a thumping great ariel hehe

At the same time, it could provide an added service for passengers. I'm sure a decent internet connection would come in handy when working on the way to the airport, for example.

After a few google searches, I'm none the wiser really - is it just a case of getting a data only sim contract and installing a suitable router in the car, or are there packages available?

Note to mods: Couldn't see a forum for In-Car-entertainment so thought it best to post in GG and let the gods of PH decide it's fate smile

Those Mifi's are good - I used to have one for work. You could wire in an external aerial like you wanted and power it via usb/cig lighter.

Since you'll be on the roads a lot, consider going with Three. Their indoor coverage is sometimes a bit poor but outdoors is generally good. Speeds are quick and the data is uncapped (useful if you're offering it to customers).

Thirded. Our only internet access last winter, in a cottage in the back end of nowhere with barely any signal for phone calls, it still managed to pull in enough to give us faster access than we've got via ADSL in the new house (with even less mobile signal).

I've just changed to Three from o2.

I can get a good enough signal to stream radio in the remote parts of North East Scotland. Doing so eats up data like no tomorrow, but with Three it's unlimited, so that's fine.

Three offer a mobile plan with unlimited 3G internet and tethering - ie. you can use your phone as a WiFi hotspot. They also have very good coverage these days so don't believe the nonsense.

+1

Also if you research it a bit, the Three 3G service is much faster than other 3G services and is quite close to 4G speeds.

Three should be rolling out 4G in the new year and have just sent me updated carrier settings for my phone in preparation.

Good luck.

The tethered usage is limited, at least last time I checked, so just using WiFi hotspot on a phone may not be adequate.

Three is probably still your best bet though.

Certainly isn't, I'm using around 10 gig a week on a Three plan, tethered to my laptop.

The top plan includes unlimited tethering.

I got my iPad on Three two years ago as it worked out £46 more than buying from Apple, and I got 15gig if data each month as well, plus paying £29 a month was better than paying £650 in one hit. I wasn't expecting the coverage to be that great, but I was blown away by it. I have been all over the UK and it makes Vodafone and O2 look pants.
Very, very rare to loose signal and it is always 3G as well.

I have swapped all our work phones over, for those that were happy to keep their iPhones we are paying £10 a month plus vat for sim only with unlimited data and 1200 minutes and 5000 texts.

I am paying £38 a month for unlimted everything and I got a Sony Xperia Z1, wanted to try something else after 6 years with an iPhone.

There also do a sure signal now if you can't get perfect reception at home, I have that in my office.

After I got the iPad I bought a MIFi thing as well, £7 a month for 3gb data, and that sits in my car, plugged into the glove box 12v socket from a usb thing. It is creates a hotspot called "Merc WiFi" which people think is pretty cool. Great when they are on Voda or O2 and you say "just jump onto the wifi" wink

Three is so named because they only started up purely on 3G signal bands.

I mentioned it, because often when people say they always have signal when on Voda, o2 and EE they may have, but not decent data signals.

These days it is all about data, so Three makes more sense than ever.
