This is something that annoys me about a lot of cars.

This is generally cars without climate control. I've got a 320 and you can position the airflow to go to the window and to the 'face' as such.

But in cars where you turn the dial, there's never an option for this? Why the fk not?

I can have windscreen and feet, windscreen only, face only, face and feet and off.

GIVE ME THE OPTION TO HAVE FACE AND fkING WINDSCREEN AT THE SAME TIME.

I have it hard enough getting the temperature just right anyway, without this added complication.

Good grief. My first car had no heater. Try holding your breath for 30 miles to stop your breath freezing on the inside of the screen hehe

The yoof of today, all wusses! biggrin

I've wondered this before, too. Very odd design decision.

Maybe something to do with flow rate and the fan not able to keep up with demand as it requires a fair amount of air to flow to windscreen and face vents

If you tear down the dash, you'll probably find that the ducts for the face and windscreen run together until very nearly the top of the dashboard - the vents are very close together. For those two sets of vents to blow at the same you would need to push an awful lot of air through those vents which is not ideal from an engineering point of view - either bigger ducts (which would be daft) or higher flow (which would be noisy and make the back of the dashboard hot).

I'm a windscreen and feet man with those sort of dials so it was never an issue for me.

Doesn't some air flow through anyway when the vents are open? I'm pretty sure I used to angle the vents to the side windows to help clear them on a cold morning.

You don't want the face air when you're defrosting and when you've defrosted/ demisted then you can have face - no need for screen if max face air is what you're after. If you mist up again - yes you got it - turn the dial!

I lost the jist of this thread in the first few words, "cars without climate control". Can anyone explain to me what this means? Are we living in the third world?

All my cars (Fords, Vauxs, Nissan, Saab) have allowed face and screen and feet, with a mixture of each.

What cars are you driving?!

Ha !

Try my 1989 carrera's controls.

Took about a year to work out what the controls symbols meant. Separate controls for hot and cold air flow to feet, face or screen, separate control for cold fresh air, separate control by the handbrake for hot air supply fan temperature (at least it's thermostatic) and another control for the cold air fan speed.

And the air flow is so weak, it's hard to tell if it's working or not smile

What you need is an E30.

Any location, as much as you want. Ergonomically perfect too as can be used by 'feel' without taking your eyes off the road.

Exactly the same set up for E30 sans a/c.

Not sure I understand those controls, the bottom is to the feet (OK), middle is to the face (OK) the top one is away from the feet??? odd.
biggrin
