This seems to much more difficult than i imagined. I had my eye on a couple of cars, which i could easily buy cash, but i cant buy because of insurance. Im planning to move on my current car, but i havent got round to advertising it yet and can't get any decent offers from dealers. My policy with axa wont allow me a 30 day 2 car allowance like some people mention. I got a quote for a one month short term policy and it was almost as much as 12 months! So frustrating that all cars have to be insured even if not being used.

Are we talking 6 months here? Or just a week or two to sell it?

I what I did would do...

ETA: Distance selling laws from online purchases can also be your friend here wink

Not sure how long to sell it. Most cars seem to sit on ebay or autotrader for weeks/months. Difficult time of year to sell a car, but easy to buy.

Err - buy a new car and get it delivered and SORN it (as long as it's off the public highway)....

Once you've sold your current car transfer insurance and tax it.

May as well take out a full year's insurance for it - if your idea of what it's worth is right, you'll be able to cancel within the 2 weeks when it sells quickly; if the dealers are right, you'll be sat trying to sell it at too high a price for quite a long time.

It can go either way, (eg: I've had 5 part-ex quotes for my current motorbike which have all been excatly the same, and are exactly what I expected - about £400/500 down on what I'd be aiming for as a private sale... but might not get - it's where it would sell quickly and easily privately so I'd say the dealers are right and sensible. OTOH, my mother was offered £200 trade-in for her old Fiesta - I sold it without haggling to the first person who came to see it for £1050), but you need to be REALISTIC with your assessment and pricing. Everything will sell at thee right price, remember you're comparing, it seems, with cars which are NOT selling... so probably priced too high...
