Have been looking at 306Rallye's and Accord Type R's recently. These are cars long past their sell by date and many have have depreciated to the absolute bottom and are at the point when a big bill can easily dwarf the value of the car (maybe not for an ITR, but certainly for the Pug!).

For most cars of this age, a Mondeo, Escort or what have you, it would spell a trip to the scrappies, but I'm seeing cars at 190,000 miles with fresh suspension all round, cylinder head work (or even rebuilds), etc railing against financial sense because owners love their car so much they refuse to let it die. Or people will buy a car for <£1K and the spend £3k getting it the way they want.

What other cars do you think will always maintain this loyalty?

I'm thinking Rotary Mazdas will always have enough fanatics who keep them alive despite the fuel alone dwarfing the cars value!

Porsche 928's are probably there already- from reading threads on here they seem like total money pits, but owners seem more than happy enough to put up with the heartache.

Will the R26.R & Clio Cup go the same way? I guess it's almost the definition of the classic car, nothing would last forty years unless somebody thought it was worth more than it's monetary value.

I thought most of them took an early trip to the scrapyard and there's a just a handful still in the hands of die-hard enthusiasts.

Cars that avoid the scrapyard as a breed need to have something special about them which makes them fundamentally desirable - usually the right looks. And then they need to be sufficiently common to sustain a long life reasonably cost-effectively with parts supply etc. Consider, for instance, the way history treats the MGB compared with the far superior TR7 or much more modern MGF.

I think most got hatches will get to that point, certainly the well regarded ones - Renaultsport cup Megane's/Clio's, Type R models etc.

Numbers always dwindle but there's always some enthusiasts keeping models going.
