Coming back from college I had to brake to avoid an oncoming van, nothing too hard mind you, but there was a bit of smoke coming from the front wheels/sides of the bonnet. Is this normal?

They can do but not usually after being applied once, did the wheels lock, may have been a bit of tyre smoke.

Water on your brakes from being parked at college. Its not smoke, its steam.

This is England, of course its wet :P The wheels didn't lock, it wasn't a 'proper' emergency stop; but i had been using them quite a bit on the back roads.

So, you have come back from a two hour hoon and then blame the van for the bollowing clouds of burning brake pad biggrin

I did set fire to some, cheapy autostores brake pads, seemingly made from wood, few hard stops, impressive blaze, was glad I needed a pee, remember getting home and my dad asking me if I had been hammering my car and that those brake pads smell like burning piss biggrin

I had this a few times as my rear callipers were starting to fail. They were not releasing properly. Fourth time they didn't release and cracked the pad and damaged the disk.

New pads, disks, stripped and cleaned callipers and all was well for a few months... Then it happened again. New callipers this time with more new disks and pads because the just replaced disks had been heated too much.

Nice way to spend £1000 over 6 months eek

Ford Ka brakes.... not good for stopping full stop let alone with some semblance of urgency! And i was only driving for about 20 minutes beforehand :/

I used to be able to get the Mercedes Ambulance brakes to smoke up pretty good after a run from Airedale to Leeds General Infirmary when carrying an emergency transfer. Pretty stinky too.

I managed to set fire to the brake pads of an Audi TT 225 not long after they first came out.
I still clearly remember that 60min drive; I don't think I've ever spanked a car so hard since.

Did the same in an early 90's Rover 214 laugh

I might be a bit of steam OP, did they work OK afterwards?
