What is it with the 2.0 diesels so many awful but ford and vag seem the worst.

Noisy , poor mpg return on careful driving

Oh ford have the worst loudest relays /clicking for the wiper system on any car I have driven -glad my radio works to block out some of the sound ESP with winter here

I get 52mpg on average out of my VW 2.0 TDi over the last few thousand miles...can't say it's noisy on its natural habitat - the motorway.

Got the VAG 2.0 in its cheapest application - Ibiza FR. Fairly refined, torquey and an easy 55mpg. Can only imagine its even better in bigger/softer cars.

Noisy wiper relay? - holy crap - how dull does your life need to be for someone to get annoyed about this?

I'm a fan of Ford, but like for like their engines always seem to have poor economy compared with their rivals.

I had a Connect and a Berlingo as work vehicles in an old job. The Berlingo was doing close to 50 MPG compared the Connect that was averaging around 36-37 MPG. The Citroen was a lot quicker too and four years older!

The Transit I had also had a really loud relay that could be heard on every intermittent wipe!

Until recently I had a Caddy with the 1.9 SDI engine, it was slow, but a great engine IMO.

VAG diesels are the only ones I've found where the official mpg figure is achievable - BMW and Jag diesels we owned were 15-20% down on official 'combined' figure.

Ford especially have made cracking petrol engines for the last 20 years, some of the most reliable I have seen. It's hard to believe the diesels from around 2000 onwards have came from the same company.

Some Ford Diesels are PSA engines IIRC, the 1.4 and 1.6 TDCIs IIRC.

Those two aren't great, the 2.0 PSA unit is much better IMO. However, I was thinking more of the Ford 2.0Tdci engine.

The VAG 2.0 TDI CR isn't bad, quite a smooth and refined engine particularly good with the DSG.

Focus 1.6 TDCI is relatively decent to drive too and not overly noisy.

My Octy VRS lives on the motorway and averages 44mpg. It's a nice engine as diesels go but my old 1.9TDI 110 passat never dropped below 50 mpg.

Nope the 1.8/2.0 tdci engines are ford engines the 1.8 is better than the 2.0 which likes to eat injectors. The 1.6/1.4 tdci engines are psa engine and are crap the 1.4 is slightly better than the 1.6 in my experience the 1.6 is to be avoided.

I've no idea what you guys are talking about. It's like you're speaking in code, or maybe Klingon.

Well, PSA (literally Peugeot Societe Anonyme but with extra accents in reality redface which translates as Peugeot plc in English-speak) dates from when Peugeot took over Citroen around 30 years ago. In the context of this thread, PSA means Peugeot/Citroen-developed so-called "HDI" engines which have a poor reputation.

The 1.4 & 1.6 TDCI Diesel engines in Fords are PSA 1.4 & 1.6 HDIs.

But Ford make their own 1.8 & 2.0 TDCI Diesel engines though, rather than importing them from Peugeot as they do the 1.4Ds and 1.6Ds (as per my first paragraph).

I think, from reading the thread, that this is right? hehenuts

The 2 litre chain drive twin cam 16v diesel, known as the tddi fitted originally from 2000/2001 and altered slightly in 2002 and from then on known as a tdci is a PSA engine, not a Ford engine, its fitted to Transit and Citroen Relay vans as well.
replaced in 2006/7,with a belt drive PSA engine in the MK4 mondeo and mk2 focus.

The 1.8 is a completely different unit, being a sohc cast iron engine of the endura family derived from the escort/orion 1.8tdi lump,FFS!
