Hi all, eldest daughter moved to London last summer, so I cancelled her car insurance, kept her car as a runabout, and insured in my name.

I've spent a few hours trying to get her insured for the week she's home at christmas...

Current insurers won't do it as they have a minimum age of 23, and all the other short-term insurers are declining as it evidently doesn't fit their model.

22 years old, 5 years NCD.

Any ideas, other than taking out a policy then cancelling and paying for time on cover?

Thanks smile

I'm fairly sure most companies have a 14 day cooldown period for you to cancel your insurance. Perhaps the best thing is to take out a new policy and cancel it within 14 days or something (obviously read the small-print first).

Seems odd that you can't get temp insurance based on her driving experience and the fact it's her car. I could understand if it was a 2.0tdi Audi but I'm assuming this is some sort of small hatchback?

Just googled 'your driver temp insurance' and it returned this:

Don't know if it will be of any help. smile

I'm confused - if the car is insured in your name then surely you just ring the insurer and add her to the policy?!?

why would you keep the car depreciating on the drive with you having to insure it, when your daughter can't use it and hasn't taken it to uni? Why not just sell it? Also how does she have 5 years NCD if she's not insured on anything?

well if he's the main user then surely he can just add her as a named driver and it won't be fronting, or is there something else going on here?

Add her 'indefinitely', then cancel again when she leaves.

I guess that the problem is that it's short-term cover required rather than adding her as a named driver on your policy.

It would probably be cheaper just to add her to the existing policy and leave it at that!?

Temp and short-term insurance for people under 25 tends to be tricky (no-claims tends not to affect those premiums).

p.s. yes, there's the issue of 'primary user' to consider of course - insurance companies can be fastidious when it comes to not actually providing the service you request of them...

I'd say dad likes his no claims, not claimed as it were biggrin . That's why my kids won't get put as named drivers on any of mine.

Don't any of you read? Current insurer WON'T add her to the policy because of her age!

Can you blame them? Who wants to insure a 22 year old who only drives once a year?!

Way I read that is that they won't insure on a temporary basis...

OK so if it's daughter's car and Dad is just using it whilst she's away, and now the insurance he took out on it won't insure her on her own car... surely Dad has to cancel the insurance he took out, take the financial hit and then she can just insure the car herself on a permanent basis... it's either her car or his car.

Because I use it!
She was insured, in her name, until she moved to London. Not uni.
