A modern day Escort Mark 1 or 2

Following on from reading the Sierra Sapphire thread I've been pondering for a while - is there a modern day Mark 1 or 2 Escort. Basic car, RWD, no frills, simple mechanics for home maintenance, tunable, chuckable?

Probably about as far from Simple home mechanics you could get.

Nothing I can think on will be as basic as a MK1 or MK2 escort was ( a good thing too)

I'd say the modern equivalent as near as possible would be something like an E36 6-cylinder - simple, old-skool fun, upgradeable, cheap to buy, cheap on bits and plenty of second hand stuff. Not too big or wide either

Why? Basic multi-point injection, no CAN ECU's all over the place, hydraulic steering, simple ABS. Sounds great to me.

Nothing emission laws ,and safety Abs air bags etc ,make every recent car complex, best bet is to look at older than 2000 or kit car??
