Stick or twist dilemma!
Discussion
Finances are tight at the moment and I need to cut living costs down for a couple of years till my son starts school and we can get a joint income coming in again.
I have a dilemma re the family hack. It’s a Mondeo ST200 which is generally in very good nick. Two years ago the head gasket started to fail so I had a chat with my mechanic who confirmed it was otherwise in very good health. So rather than scraping £1500 together for a dull and possible risky replacement purchase I put the money into the ST as I felt knew where I was with it.
Now to the crux of it. I had it Mot’d yesterday and it failed needing welding to the outer sills. I had this done but I’m now concerned the tin worm has got a hold and is not goanna go away.
Question is from a financial point do I:
1. Keep it with the intention of just doing essential maintenance, hope next MOT I don’t get massive bills for more welding and ultimately run it into the ground.
2. Try and sell it for £1500, get something cheaper on tax a fuel with a maximum budget of £3000 but take on the risks of a car I don’t fully know the history of and possible hidden costs.
N.B. I don’t commute via car and we do max 5,000 miles PA so fueling the STs not really a killer, though a saving would help.
So carry on or move on?
