Current Best Petrol Engines
Discussion
My next car will not be a diesel. I don't do enough mileage and I don't like them.
What manufacturers have the best petrol engines in their current lineups? It seems I can get a quick and frugal diesel without going to AMG/ M/ RS levels of cost.
If I want a hot hatch there seems to be a few about. But if I want a decent sized car what is the best mix of performance/ refinement/ good noise when pressing on but with sensible fuel consumptions (40 ish on a run say)?
BMw *35i engines seem to have it covered but what else?
VAG 2.0 TFSi job? Any good in a Passat/ A4 sized car?
Merc? Jag? Only seem to offer diesel or mental. Volvo? Any others.....

Porsche flat 6. Available for new Golf GTI money in a lightly used Caymen or Boxster. Brilliant engine - no 4 pot will come close to it for noise, flexibility, torque or response. It also happens to be bolted into one of the best handling cars on sale.
And hugely unreliable according to the internet!Axionknight said:

Honda and the 2.0 V-tec they put in the Type R (if still made)
near 40mpg on a run, 200bhp and naturally aspirated.
No longer in production for the UK market. The FN2 Type R was done away with in 2011 as the engine did not meet European emissions laws, *spits*near 40mpg on a run, 200bhp and naturally aspirated.
F20C is better than the B/K series engine anyway

Mercedes 250 CGI? Got to better that the CDI which would wake the dead.

This included motorway cruising @ 80mph
Motorway Traffic
Hooning around the alps
Day to day runs of 0.5 miles to the beach/supermarket
40mpg is easily done, especially @70mph
In the US market you can still get the Volvo 5 pot petrol but I think in the UK it's 4 cylinders only for petrol engines. Jaguar do have a 360bhp odd supercharged V6 in the XF, if that's not too mental?
To be honest most everyday 4 cylinder petrol engines are no more exciting that 4 cylinder diesel engines. The most recent petrol powered rep mobiles I've driven have all felt oddly limp of wrist for their displacement and power. Very sad there is no sensible-ish mid range 6 cylinder cars available any more

The N52 BMW engines are superior to those stats:near 40mpg on a run, 200bhp and naturally aspirated.
over 40mpg cruising at 70mph
270BHP in top-tune
Straight 6 naturally aspirated

Minor issue of dumping its IMS or scoring the bores, though, eh?dme123 said:

I guess this is my point entirely.

The EP3 was always far better on fuel (as expected for 2 less cylinders and 100bhp). I only mentioned it as for a 4 pot its brilliant.

343BHP at 8000rpm from 3.2 litres does make you grin, though
