Just had a set of 4 winter tyres fitted to some 2nd hand steel wheels I bought from ebay. However, the bolts that were supplied with the wheels are the wrong size and wouldn't fit.

Am I ok to use the bolts from my alloy wheels on the steel wheels, bearing in mind the alloy ones are tapered where they meet the wheel, or is this frowned upon?

Match bolts to the wheels. If you're thinking of using radius bolts on tapered alloys they'll keep coming loose ( 1st hand experience!)and you'll chew the bolt holes up in the wheels aswell. If they are radius alloys source some radius bolts and if the wheels require tapered bolts get tapered. scrapyard or ebay should sort it!

Wheel bolts for alloys tend to be longer too.

Definitely get the correct bolts.

ETA: *alloys (corrected spelling!!)

Guess i'm the other way round. The steel wheels I have are not tapered, but the bolts have a taper to them, like these:
Think i'll be looking for some proper bolts. Hopefully Halfords do them as I need them for christmas travel.

If you are stuck you could try a scrapyard, if you can find a steel wheeled variant of your car there to take the bolts from.
