Mercedes 190E 2.3-16: Pic Of The Week

Two reasons why we love a 16-valve Merc 190 rumbling round Nardo's celebrated tarmac

The Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 is a cool car. Not only was it the car used by Ayrton Senna in that Nurburgring race, it was also a record breaker.

2013 marked 30 years since the introduction of the 2.3-16, a milestone commemorated by Mercedes through revisiting one of its lesser known achievements with the 190. At Nardo a few weeks before its launch, a 2.3-16 broke three world records driving flat out for 200 hours. It covered 50,000km (31,068 miles) at an average of 247.9km/h (154mph). Chris Harris was at the commemorative event, so expect more from him over the festive period.

Until then, here's the Senna and the Nardo 190s. One may be better known than the other, but both are more than worthy of a place on your desktop.

Always liked these early 2.3 models.Still able to find good examples for reasonable money.Great build quality and a great driving car.Bargains compared to E30 M3 & Sierra Cosworth.

Have to agree, as good as an E30 M3 IMO so not really sure why the M3 seems to have attained cult status (with the price tag to match) and these haven't, tis a fickle world the classic car market.

I found a picture of mine from back in in 1989 and thought how plain it looked. I really wanted the AMG alloys on it all along but cash from business ran short not long after I got it. Actually, I really enjoyed owning that car, I'm convinced the build quality of German cars was a click up on current ones. In the intervening years I've thought I should of had the M3 (conveniently forgetting they were LHD) but recently I've warmed back towards the 2.3 16, probably because at 50 I'm now in the age range it was probably aimed at! Happy days racing home for about an hour and twenty in late evenings to catch Capital City on the box smile

My first one set itself on fire within a week. Its replacement was sold after a trip to Lancaster Porsche in Norwich. On the way there I was stuck behind a lorry for a long time, when the opportunity to overtake came I pulled out, the Volvo Estate behind also pulled out & he overtook me and the truck in one move and he was gone, I didn't see which way the Volvo went. Completely blew my 190E into the weeds. So no fond memories here.

Are you sure yours was 2.3 16v as I don't think there were any contemporary Volvo Estates at the time that could blow a 190E Cosworth "into the weeds"??

I still miss my 2.6 - Smoke Silver with all the AMG goodies fitted by the factory before delivery. Though I was crass enough to have the Rude Mercs grille and wheel arch add-ons!
Why did I ever part with you?

Yes, it was a Cosworth.. my second as the first one became a fireball. I overtook the truck and the Volvo was behind, as I was pulling in after my overtake he pulled out and shot by me. I tried but could not catch him. True story..

I actually prefer the slightly more subtler looks of the Evo 1. My ideal car would be an Evo 1 with the engine and other upgrade bits from the Evo II

You could get the AMG Power pack - different throttle body, inlet cam, exhaust and higher rev limit - on the EVO 1 to bump power up to EVO 2 levels. Expensive though

Lovely.

Have had one (2.5 manual) for 8 years - need to sell it, owing to the arrival of replacement, but can't help feeling the values will go up the moment I do.
