RE: Ferrari 250LM: Time For Tea?
Friday 20th December 2013

2015 would actually be a perfect time for Ferrari to launch its rumoured Le Mans comeback. Amazingly it would be 50 years since its last victory at the 24 Hours in a 250LM. This was of course the time of the GT40 also, which took its four consecutive wins immediately after the 250 from '66 until '69.
Ferrari 250LM: Time For Tea?
So, Ferrari might be going back to Le Mans? Here's a taste of the last Prancing Horse to win

So now seemed the right time to revisit that legendary 250. Fortunately, the guys at DK Engineering recently had chassis #6045 for a restoration and, considerate lads that they are, filmed the finished car at Millbrook.
This video is all about the noise. This is good, as it appears to have been filmed through a very dark lens that dulls even the driver's prancing horse cufflinks. Unfortunately, just as it's getting exciting, the minute is up and you're left craving another V12 hit. A short and sweet one then, but rather joyous all the same.
See the 250LM here.

Here you go, so you don't feel left out
- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/370462877353?hlpht=...I remember, circa 1995, watching the Top Gear special on Ferrari.
Clarkson was enjoying a 348, ironic considering his later negative comments, a 456 IINM and he interviewed several owners, etc.
About half way through was some old footage of a 250LM through the hills. I can remember the voice over because I kept re-winding to listen again:
"Even now, in a depressed market, you'd need to find a seven figure sum to buy this car. It'd be worth it though; for the noise alone"
Cue V12 symphony..............

I DON'T WANT ANY CUFFLINKS, I HAVE BUTTONS!
Sorry to be the voice of dissent but I just don't get the fascination with these cars. Yes it makes a lovely noise but it's not a very pretty car in my eyes and there are MUCH prettier classics. Not really sure why they fetch such vast sums of money, you could buy a whole fleet of stunning cars for the price of one of these, overpriced is not the word.
I have an article about a yellow one (EVO magazine?), i think it's the nicest looking racing Ferrari , the Lusso the best road car.
Great video, i don't usually like loud cars but make an exception for racers.
As i wrote on the Le Mans thread, if you worry or moan about diesels/hybrids you should go to the classic Le Mans weekend, pure joy.

Don't get too upset fellers, they weren't that nice to drive, back in the day. I raced one a couple of times in the late 60, & you needed earplugs to reduce the rattle & bangs of the very ill fitting bodywork, & the clatter of the valve gear, virtually eliminating the pleasure of it's exhaust.
It was reasonably referred to as the old nail in the team. The ventilation was so bad, you started sweating, just getting into the thing. Perhaps some of those that people have paid over $1,5 million for, have been made a bit civilized with work done on them today, & they sure needed it. In a wet race, the water came in everywhere. It was wetter in the old LM than in an open car.
I also did a bit in the P4 we had on loan from Ferrari. It was a much nicer car in every way, if not so successful at Le Mans. It was not that successful in Oz either actually. A 24 hour race car up against local things tuned for 50 mile races, it didn't have much chance. The one race it should have won, the Surfers Paradise 6 hour race in 68, one driver cut a corner a bit much, taking the steering rack & the sump out of the thing.
At least in that one the old LM showed it's deep down class, taking one of it's last wins.
Yep a thing of beauty, but best admired from a short distance.
