Another insurance moan.
Discussion
That time of year when insurance is due to for changing. Constant attack from people wanting to sell cover for this, legal aid for that and so forth.
Cheapest I got for a year is £410 for a 9 year old 320d, with 8 years no claims and a licence for 9 years. Is it any wonder people can't be arsed getting insured these days?
When I was customising the policy, I set the voluntary excess at £250 which gave me the £410 price. I wanted to see what happened if I really changed the excess, so for the purpose of experianment, set the excess at £1000. The price went down to £408....
I hate car insurance.

I hate car insurance.
Just renewed insurance on my 996. 5years NCB. Im 30 and its just cost £550 with No claims protected and different wheels declared. 3 points and a non fault accident as well.
Pays to really shop about as my renewal came in at over £700 and most other quotes i was getting were over £650.
Try Mayfaironline.co.uk

That sounds like a good deal compared to what I have. I strongly hate insurance companies.
I have spent the last 4 years overseas, had a licence for 14 years and been driving the whole time, with 10 years NCB in the Uk before I travelled overseas. When I came back in August, was told by every insurance company I contacted that NCB 'expires' after 2 years (sometimes 3) and I now have zero NCB.
I only wanted to get insured on my mothers £500 1.8 Peugeot 406 as a runaround. The cheapest quote I could find was £2500 (had some laughable £9k quotes). After similar terrible quotes on other bland cars I found that I could get insured on an MX5 for £950ish, so bought one of them. That's still 3x what I used to pay before I left, and more than I was paying when I was 17.

Try Admiral, they always give me better prices than the price comparison sites which I find useless.
There's some counterintuitive things you can try:
- Increase the stated value of your car (maybe they think you will be more careful?)
- Parking the car overnight on the street might be cheaper than a garage or driveway (plenty of thefts occur by breaking your window and stealing your car)
- Change the excess to £500 (no idea why but this is sometimes cheaper than a £1k excess!)
Also the premium is highly dependent on your postcode.

Add an extra couple of thousand pounds to the value of the car and it will go down.
Add an older lady driver with 14 years no claims and her own car. It will go down further.
Be realistic as well. You might live in a dodgy area, you have a BMW which is likely to be driven by numpties or stolen, so the risk goes up again.
The fact that you only save a few quid by changing the excess is neither here nor there. They clearly don't want to give you insurance for less money, with the details that you have provided.
