Changed an L to an E using bits of insulating tape. Not entirely sure when it would have been done. Yesterday night seems unlikely as it was lashing it down.

Why would someone do that? Seems a bit of an odd thing to do. Unless it was one of my colleagues who think they are funny.

Nothing. Changed from BL1x to BE1x. Its not a private plate, just a typical current style age related one.

It's probably to try and get you pulled over and in lots of trouble for a fake plate (even though you didn't do it)

If I were going to alter my own plate.

I would also alter a few others nearby.

Then should I get stopped - I already have my alibi (assuming others have reported it / been stopped)

Definitely this, how could they possible spend 12 seconds post theft altering it. Immediately panic and call all the cops.

Probably just kids.

Best bit of insulating tape mischief I've seen was altering the sign "Jed Forrest" to put an "I" after the D smile

Is there any point in reporting to plod? Or will they just think I'm wasting their time?

On one of the Police camera action type progs they pulled some for having tape on the plate, he'd changed the number from XY05 ABC to XY85 ABC.

Unfortunately for him he hadn't / plod had worked out that it won't be issued until 2035 (I think)

In my teens there was a car parked down our road with the reg no. KN03 SLX after a few beers one evening I walked past it on my way home, couldn't resist going back with some pvc tape and making a slight alteration. From what I remember it was a few days before they realised their plate now said KN0B SEX

Childish I know but it amused me at the time!

It's a "jolly jape".

My friends and I used to do this sort of stuff all the time, writing I hate pigs, coppers smell, stop me I'm drunk, the drivers a puff, etc etc etc on the rear of vehicles.

Nobody died or was hurt.
