Hi,

Girlfriend returned home earlier with a horrendous whine coming from the engine and a massive loss in power on her 2007 120d. Had the AA man come out and confirmed it was the turbo.

Car is 250 miles overdue a service as we haven't had a chance to get it in! So guess it's my fault.

Problem is I'm struggling to find a garage that will do it before she is due back at work and she can't be without it.

I'm left with a couple of options (can't get a hire car as she's 20, can't get her insured on my car):

1) buy a new car
2) fix it myself with a new or reconditioned turbo

1 seems excessive! So...how hard is it to fit a new turbo and flush all the fluids on my driveway? I plan to take the air box out and check all the hoses and breathers first!

Suggestions?

Happy Christmas ey!!

250 miles over a service is fk all so it shouldnt be related to that.
Did it have oil and water in?

So long as you have all the tools and a bit of confidence, it's only nuts and bolts (and a few hoses)...

Apparently the extended service intervals are too long anyway! Na oil etc seems fine. To be fair it's done 108k as I used to use it to commute to work as well!

I think it's a fairly common failure!

When is she due back at work ?

Replacing a Turbocharger is not a 5 minute job .

Where are you going to find a turbo quickly ,everything's closed for at least 2 days ?

If you're going the DIY route be extra careful that the blown turbo hasn't contaminated the inlet with engine oil. It doesn't take much oil to cause an engine run away and subsequent failure.

Avis minimum age is 17, young driver surcharge applies for <25s

Must have held the relevant licence for 36 months

On similar vain our Passat spat it's sump through the turbo many months back. As an old shed it isn't worth spending big money on. Even recon turbos are mad money.
Yes it's precision engineered but most cars have them now.

Still sat on the drive 10 months later.

A 2007 120D has to be worth £3 or £4k at least surely, a £500 turbo is surely a given?

Go on eBay and find the cheapest shed with tax and MOT and use it for a few weeks if a hire isn't an option. With the usual overspend of many at this time of year there should be a bargains close by. Might even be a small profit!

Also depends in what way it has failed. Turbo replacement on my A3 should have been a couple of hours, but as it was an oil seal failure it had dumped the engine oil into the intercooler along with the impeller fins from the intake side. Which doubled the labour because the front end had to come off to flush and clean the intercooler and associated pipework!

Edit: spelling

Depending on access changing a turbo involves 4 bolts and a couple of hoses, have no idea what you would have to take apart to get to it though. Wouldn't just stick on a second hand turbo, find somewhere that will do you a swap for your dead one in exchange for a recon one, can see it still taking you a fortnight at best to sort yourself at this time of year frown

It's fully specced (nav, leather etc) so it's got to be worth 5 or 6k. It's worth doing the job I think. I'm starting to think a smoker is the best option until I can get it in. Maybe get her a bargain barge.

Hmmm this is where I'm scratching my head. I don't want to pull it apart on my drive only to confuse myself and have to take it to a garage with my tail between my legs and telling them the parts are in the boot.. I've been trying to find a guide somewhere!

Thanks. Bookmarked.

Does anybody know what the quality of these units are. Significant saving over the 800-1000 quid I've heard thrown about.

There's loads of threads about dead turbos on these, you might gain some decent info on the easiest way to sort it by having bit of a dig about. Long life service intervals suck

Is it the same engine as those bloody 320d's and swirl flaps fk up on it?

IIRC it happened to one I had for a short period. Bill was around £700 Although at the time I had an AA policy which covered me for £500 parts and labour which proved useful. Was an 07 320d had done about 70k when it let go. Smoke everywhere and then just no power and the steepest hill in the area lol.

I would buy a turbo myself from a breaker and then pay a garage to fit it if you aren't competent yourself.

A garage put a recon one on my car, it failed within 100miles. And that was after engine flush, intake clean, new oil pipes etc etc.

Turns out recon one wasn't balanced properly and promptly shat it's impeller fins into my intercooler, if they'd have gone any further they'd have wrecked the engine.

Car is with garage until 6th of Jan now having a brand new garrett unit fitted.

Just my experience though.

I wouldn't touch a cheap turbo off ebay even brand new, they are known to fail and various people on audisrs.com have found out the hard way!
Get yours rebuilt by someone like The Turbo Unit in Tamworth, they did an excellent job on my RS4 turbos

Definitely a turbo?

My car (a e320 cdi mb), spat it's dummy out this evening with similar symptoms. I limped the last few miles up a steep hill with a 21 ft caravan behind me, at a rather sedate speed.

I'm hoping (and expecting) that it's a split hose, but given where I am its a an aa job tommorow to find out, if it's a parts job then I'm a little fked.
