I've just been given a Hyundai getz '53 with 35k on it
unfortunately the street cred value is below zero so I'm looking at what I could upgrade to?
I have £2,500 and the trade in value of the car
having owned 1.9TDi, 1.8 20vT and a 335i something with a bit more power would be appreciated!
I'd love another 1.8 but insurance quotes are coming up a bit too high on Seat Ibiza FR :/

I've looked at the Fiat punto/bravo 1.4 T-jet 120 does anybody have experience with this engine?

Or any other suggestions?!

You could pick up a decent RX-8 for that money if you're willing to take the risk? I did and it has worked out great!

Left field suggestion - Mitsubishi Colt CZT. Cheap, 1.5 turbo, 150 bhp. Handling is not it's forte, but then again given you were considering a grande punto, I doubt it's a top priority...

Ford Fiesta ST would most probably be a more fun car to own.

I take it insurance would be too high on a Clio 172/182 if the Seat Ibiza FR is out?

Been through all of them, RX8 was about £1800+ to insure, the rest are £1500ish

yeah handling isn't major, I'd prefer an extra bit of grunt and well anything is better than a Getz so I'm looking at it as a win win

The Astra 1.8s are coming up with reasonable quotes - less than a mini
Still looking at the 1.8t in a lower state of tune? It comes in a 125bhp variant?

What are your circumstances and what will you be using the car for? Depending on your answers, suggestions will vary a lot!

Yep, exactly. How old are you to start with, and is street cred all that important vs killer insurance quotes?

335i to Hyundai Getz. You must be in a state of shock.
You'll get around a grand p/xing the Getz, so you're looking at 3.5k pricepoint at a used car sales place.
you'd get at least 12-1500 private, meaning you can buy more car. Get the Getz up for sale on Gumtree or autotrader. Sounds like you have use of another car if necessary, so there will be no problem getting to view cars if yours has sold.

Citroen C4 VTS more expensive to insure than an RX-8? Strange. confused

How often will you be doing that 120 mile commute? If not often, don't worry about MPG. Sometimes "old man" saloons can be the cheapest cars for 20-somethings to insure (a 24-year old mate pays less than half of the prices you're quoting for a Rover 75 1.8T) purely because young people don't normally own / crash them. If you get one with a decent engine, can make quite a fun Q-car (try a quote for a Volvo S60 T5). wink

If however, you want something small, cheap to insure and run but still fun, why not a Fiat Panda 100HP?

You're 22 and at Uni and have been given a car for nowt. Keep it and run it for bashing about in instead of paying half the cost of a potential new car in insurance for the first year alone!

This.

It reads like you have been gifted the car.
Seems a bit impolite to then sell it on for something else.

Run it into the ground and save for something better.

Save the money and run the Getz, they're not that bad. It could be worse, it could be a 997cc Metro.

Not many younger drivers will own a RX-8? Hence more claims for the C4, shirley? wink

Integra R DC2.

I had one at 23. I though the insurance was reasonable. Decent MPG whilst driving sensibly. You may be looking at around £3,000 for an acceptable one.

Check inner rear arches though!

The 1.8 Astra Engine has grunt but is limited as they tend to gear them a little high. I believe you are thinking of the GM 1.4 and 1.6 Turbos which in the right car are little flyers. Having said that they tend to be rare.
