The ones I know about are playing around with job title, saying you park on the road at night and adding your mom and pop on to the policy also. Any others?

Drive safely, obey the rules of the road, and build up your NCB.

If you're buying a new car, check how much it is to insure. Never knew I was that stupid, but I've just bought a civic type r, which cost me £875 to insure with 3 years NCB, ouch frown

Go to moneysavingexpert.com. They have a strategy involving several comparison sites and others.

Bear in mind that "cheapest" rarely equates to "best" though.

But you rarely get to find out which is best until you have crashed, which is something you don't want to do.

Own your own home.
Park your car on a driveway.
Work as a teacher.
Drive a smallish modern car which is safe and cheap to mend.
Get older (up to 70ish, then get younger).
Live in provincial suburbia.
Don't use your car for class 1 business use.
Add your wife/girlfriend/mother to the insurance.
Avoid being prosecuted for motoring offences.
Shop around using comparison websites.

I went to http://comparethemarket.com/ then took the cheapest price to A-Plan (who had just opened localy) they beat the price by £50 for the buisness, then I mentioned I could get 15% through PH with Flux they knocked that off as well and threw in legal and breakdown. party

Don't get points for jumping a red light (genuine error)
Don't let the wife crash into another car.

Oops.

I paid nearly just over £700 for my Civic Type R and I'm 32 with 9 years no claims. I did add it on mid policey though, so that always bumpbs it up by £40 or so.

All our cars fit on the drive, but my company car is usually on the road. I just changed my quote on Confused.com for an M135i from Driveway to Road and the premium went down by £14.

Genuinely confused (.com)

If you decide to use a single broker make sure you find out how large a panel they are selecting from. Some brokers work from only a small selection of insurers while if you use three or four comparison sites you can be pretty sure that you're offering your business to a lot of insurers.

Good advice as well, mine was a little scant.

I have always found Saffron to be very good. I wouldn't say don't use price comparison at all, but once you know the broad price range a good broker can usually hone that based on your needs.

Driveway is normally cheapest in my experience. It avoids the risk of scratching the car going in and out of the garage as well as the risk of the car being crashed into while parked on the street. (As has happened outside my house twice in the last two years).

Or as our aged neighbour did - his leg locked / seized on the accelerator. Straight down the drive, out of the back of the garage and into the compost heap. He was unhurt but took this as as good sign to stop driving...

Depending on your history, increase the excess to as much as possible. biggrin:

If you do less than average mileage, tell them, it makes a huge difference in premium.

If it is a higher risk vehicle and can be garaged, do it.

Ditto tracker, depending on insurer.

Finally, negotiate hard. If you feel like saying you have had a much lower quote tell them, even if you havent. Remember, they want your business, especially if you are a good risk.......thumbup

Question…

Given the comparison sites are passing all the details to the insurers.
One could assume that the insurer quotes are not thrown away (cheap to store and they are valid customer enquiries)
Given people may run many variants of their details...

… At what point does an insurer, based on risk profile AND the behaviour of the buyer at quote stage flag the account as a potential risk?
