What kind of things should I be asking for when buying a 2nd hand car from a dealership? For example if they wont budge on the price what should I be demanding?

All depends on the price.

If you overpaid then I'd be looking at free services, mats, tax, etc.

If you're buying the cheapest in the area then you'll get zilch.

Buying a used car does not entitle you to freebies and if you do get one, you'll be paying for them one way or another.

Just bought a used x5 from a dealer and they added 12 months tax, extra set of (rubber) mats, boot load liner and rank of fuel..

Not bad.

And a better trade in and cash of screen price

You should demand:
12 months tax ( be prepared to meet halfway at 6)- ignore this if its zero rated obviously.
Full tank of petrol.
Extend the warranty if the warranty is actually any good.
If they do servicing - first service free (make sure you understand if they are giving you parts, labour or both)
New tyres if they're low.
Some Golden Fleeces for the rear footwells
That the washer bottle be filled up with unicorn tears.
That someone be stationed outside the garage at all times to salute you should you ever drive past.

I think it very much depends on how expensive the car is.
But obviously you should demand a go on the salesman's wife, if we are being demanding.

Don't forget an air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror

Depends where you are buying from and how much you are paying.

I would always rather the lowest price than stty freebies I can buy myself.

Do they or can they offer free insurance for a week or a few days. Enough to get the car back home, then I can buy the insurance?

I managed a free service and a towbar installation when I bought my van. Dealer wasn't budging on price.

Oh, and free seat covers.

The way I look at this, if the dealer is giving me something for free then I must be overpaying. To get 'free' tax, fuel or whatever the dealer must have made a big margin. If they were giving things away I would negotiate again on the price.....

I wouldn't demand, it makes you sound like a petulant child. No harm in asking though. When negotiating keep it friendly and firm, bare in mind both parties want to achieve something. Don't even enter into negotiation unless you are 100% on the car (if the deal is right of course)

Timing belt and water pump if due\nearly due\over due.

A few garages will claim full service history but then try finding evidence of the bely being done in the paperwork.

An absolute must is some white fluffy dice to hang off the rear view mirror, plus some go faster stripes down the side.

If they won't budge on this look elsewhere.....

What does the car need?

Is it in tip top condition - recently serviced, good tyres, 12 month MOT etc?
