Went to a local dealer who had an E46 M3 just to have a nose at it as Im getting tempted to get one, while there he asked if Id part ex my 330d.
So told him to humour me with an offer (I NEVER do part ex as I consider it a rip off) and he made a stupid offer which I just laughed at. Within 30 seconds he added £1500 onto it, and then to really make me laugh he tried to justify his offer by showing me what We buy any car would give me! laugh
Thats the first time Ive ever seen that used as a valuation, I told him he might as well of used an ebay auction that hadn't finished yet :roll eyes:

I know they try to devalue a trade in, but he was really taking the piss, next he tries to show me others on autotrader and how much cheaper they are than what Id want for mine, he wasn't even searching for the same car! All were 325d and SE not M Sport.

I think I'll stick to selling privately, Ive had much less bother than trying to be ripped off by a bullstting dealer....

You should have asked him to match the WWAC valuation for the M3.

Anything above WBAC is generally a pretty reasonable for a p/ex offer. I think WBAC might be based on CAP trade anyway. Sounds like his first offer was taking the piss, but perhaps not his second one.

1st offer was 6k, second was 7.5k, then WBAC was about 4.6k

It happened to me but over the phone, i rang up to enquire about a car the guy had in, asked about a part chop on mine and was not expecting much, his offer was a piss take, but i thanked him anyway and said i may sell some were else,
Immediately he stuck another grand on, but i told him im still not interested. At this point i was going to view the car anyway as i was interested but this dealer seemed to think that unless he took my car in he wasn't going to get a sale.
I ended the conversation but he said he was going to make some phone calls and ring back.
He did, 4 times, on the last call just before i told him strongly to fk off he got shirty and told me i was a time waster.

Needless to say i didn't buy a car from him.

Crazy, I reckon he was probably trying to buy it cheap, and then sell it on quickly for a profit.

He will have given a trade value.

I suppose you wouldn't want any warranty with the car and would waive any consumer rights and never need to claim enabling him to have no margin in a car that will be expensive to fix should it go wrong.

How do these traders sleep at night.

Thats the impression I got too, he was more interested in wanting to take my car in than trying to sell me the M3 confused

You're right, I wouldn't want a warranty and don't expect one either!
As for what I think its worth, I know what they sell for and know that 2-3k difference from his offer for me selling it myself is definitely worth my time smile

Here's one the same age and mileage range as yours and it's only £750 more than his highest offer and that's assuming it makes the asking price.

At an absolute longshot OP, it's not an E91 330d touring in grey/silver/white with an autobox, idrive, xenons and black interior is it?

If it is, i might take it off you.

I recall one of my fellow Capri fans being offered £150 for his 1986 280 Capri with sensible miles - he sold privately for £6,000 shortly after with that not being a particularly high price for a 280.

How often do you think it happens that people put a deposit down, take their own away, put it on Autotrader expecting it to sell immediately only to find it doesn't meaning that they haven't got the money to complete the purchase?

So of course dealers can treat people as time wasters if they don't trade in, it's because they often are.
