Hi There guys and girls
Im here looking for advice really. I recently quslified as a mechanic from Reaseheath College and left with my IMI level 3. I now work in a local general repair and MOT place and really enjoy it. Never have issues getting out of bed and am always quite excited for the day ahead... The issue is, this is only really work experience and theres no proper wage. I get cash in my pocket for the graft but still...
I know the money is piss poor in this trade... and tbh surely having a comfy life and a house etc is more important than living with your parents for years to come...
This has made me think. I need to change my job outlook but have no idea of where to go. I fancy something mechanically based but just not a grease monkey. A job where i can progress through the company. I know i cant walk into a 25k a year job...
Im in South Manchester. where do you even start looking for a job in this sector? Thanks for the advice.

Depending on your GCSE grades and age, are there no Mechanical Engineering apprenticeships in the area? Not the best money to start with but a good step and all your further education will be paid for.
quick search threw these results up:

Good luck anyway and keep positive

You could try working on the tools in one of the many chemical plants in your neck of the woods, they pay very well and the career progression can be pretty good. I work in the industry albeit selling into the plants and I know a quite a young guy who worked his way up from working on the tools to project engineering. He drives a 987 Boxter so is obviously doing pretty well for himself. Also there are a plethora of companies that make mechanical components and systems for the industry that are based in your area and they all have production and engineering departments. Hope this helps and good luck.
Working offshore can boost your income, plenty of disciplines to choose from with mechanical backgrounds.
There are a few courses to go through which can help you get a foot in the door.
Have a look here if you're interested. Some small colleges also do training for this and can help point you in the right direction as well as boosting your CV.
Plenty of threads on PH if you have a search on this subject. This forum is full of offshore personnel who live for cars.
I started out at the age of 24, no real mechanical experience, poor school grades, never lived in Aberdeen. Still live in central Scotland and work as a manager in the industry.
