Hi,

We traded in our old car and bought a nearly new approved used freelander 2 XS (13) reg 10,500 miles (ex factory) trading in the old car and a bank loan - from a main dealer and got what we think was a good price, it was up for 27850 and we got it for 26850 - (tow bar, metalic paint) and really like the car.

The original salesman we saw when we put down the deposit promised us the car would be serviced before we picked it up.
When we picked up the car it was a different salesman and when we were paying for it we mentioned the service and there was no service history book in the paperwork. This guy popped outside for seconds and then came back - flashed the service history and said "there's the stamp". Lovely we thought and dutifully paid all the money.

However when the excitement passed and we got back home and started to look through all the paperwork we noticed that the service history book was not filled in with any of the cars details and just had a stamp on the first service page, all throughout the book it had "replacement" on every page.

We have emailed the garage and spoke on the phone and they said they will sort out a new book and get it all filled out, updated and stamped and check if it's been serviced and if not get the car serviced so I'm hopeful but still skeptical and was wondering if anyone could help and answer the following:

Were we mis-sold the car?
What is an ex factory car?
What do they do with the car at the factory? Could they have put the car on a treadmill and in reality this car may have gone round the clock wrt mileage?
Should I accept that the factory have lost the original service book before it got to the dealer? I feel that it could be in someone's interest to lose it if there's something not quite right with the car.
How I can double check the car really has been serviced?
If they don't provide a brand new or original service book should I reject the car - I feel I should but can I?

I have been on to Land Rover customer services and they said I need to talk to the dealer but gave me a direct number if I'm not satisfied.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Factory car means it's probably a staff lease car or demo.

At that mileage I'd expect it to be a staff lease car, at that mileage though is it actually due a service?.

This could have been anything from an employee's/managers company car, a cheap employee family lease to give nearly new stock or even a rental car (unlikely for a freelander)

It would not have been run around the clock on a treadmill

Yes, now that you have delivery it will be near impossible to reject the car for this reason, the time for checking would have been before purchase/delivery. Let them procure a new service book and stamp it if necessary...

I wouldn't be surprised if it hasn't had a service before your ownership, at 10k miles and less than a year old it probably doesn't need one (according to schedule)

Hello, ex factory could mean anything. What are the first 2 letters on the registration plate? Land Rovers own cars tend to be registered in Oxfordshire so if your registration begins with an O i.e OE13 BCX then it may have been a management or rental car. Some are registered in Birmingham (B as the first letter on the plate). The V5 should also tell you who the first owner was.

As for the service, I would go into the dealers service department with your registration number and say you have just bought the car and need to know what service has been done and when the next one is due according to the system. The full details of what has been done should be recorded.

This sounds like a shoddy vehicle handover rather than a problem in itself, the car may not actually be due a service yet (16,000/12 months for a diesel Freelander). If there is no record of work being done then I would argue for a free service when it is due.

Enjoy the new car!

Hi, thanks for coming back.

The first service is due at 15000 miles or 12 months - car was registered on 21.03.2013 so due on 21.03.2014 and the LR approved used car scheme mentions that a service will be completed if it's required within 3 months and we bought the car on the 21.12.2013.

But it should still have an original service book though right or can a main dealer just give you a repalcement?

It's not due a service yet, so you're worrying about nothing.

Could it be an ex-Land Rover Experience car? Unlikely due to the higher mileage, but check for mud on the underside. hehe

As long as it's filled in properly and the service has been done as you were told it's no issue.

Why on earth would anyone hand over nigh on £30k for a car and ask these questions after the fact?

If LR are half-decent they'll have centralised servicing records - be worth a call to customer services to see if they have any records of warranty work being done, and where, if you want to try and trace it's use before you got it.
It will be genuine mileage, very unlikely to be sold through an official dealer after a Himalaya challenge or similar - they just wouldn't risk an appearance on watchdog over it.
I'm guessing they just lost the service book. Yes, any dealer can provide a replacement/duplicate book, and as long as you have receipts of all work done as well as the stamped book, it shouldn't harm your chances of selling when the time comes.
Poor dealer service really.

LRE cars are kept on the fleet and offloaded into the dealer network at nine months old - how old is your car exactly, OP? As with other JLR-owned cars, almost all will be on registrations that start with 'O'.

EDIT The only thing that could rule it out of being ex-LRE is the spec. I have a funny feeling the LRE cars will be HSEs.

I'd check all the paperwork with a fine tooth comb personally, although some people maybe feel a main dealer will look after them 100%.
It'd be interesting to know how far is it to sprint from the salesman's desk to the parts dept (book) and back via the service desk (stamp)? hehe

It is indeed done centrally, and when they give you an updated book it will read replacement on it.

Can I ask where you got the car?

FYI I did ask the most of the questions to the dealer but wanted some "friendly" advice to see if the dealer's answer's tallied up.

So far everyone elses comments have been informative and helpful, so thanks to everyone else.

The stamp on the first page is probably the PDI confirmation for when the dealer took the car from HQ or when LR registered the car for road use. Diesel Freelander's only need servicing once a year or 12/16,000 miles depending on age, probably the latter with your newer car. Your car will need its first service in March 14 from what you say so won't have any service stamps so far. I think your "replacement" stamp refers to a new service book being issued as the original had been lost. This is not unusual with ex factory cars as they may have been through a few hands before being out on a forecourt.

I bought my Freelander 2 new from Harwoods in Kent and had it serviced by them for the 3 year warranty period without issue. I had one or two questions for the sales staff over this period and they weren't from the bright end of the gene pool on occasion so I asked to speak to the dealer principle who sorted my issues on the spot. I suggest you make an appointment with the senior sales manager or the DP ask them your questions and let them resolve your problems. Your car is under the LR warranty scheme and it should come with all the paperwork you expect so let the dealership give you a coffee and sort things out for you amicably.

Didn't mean to sound like an arse and had you mentioned that you were looking to line things up then the response would have been different.

Enjoy the car, whatever it's state.

Rather different but our Used Approved Defender 110 from Harwoods was an absolute shocker.6k miles more than advertised (when it was delivered), half shafts worn, one hub bolt snapped and many more issues - sadly we didn't find out about most of these until we'd had it a while. EVERYTHING went wrong with it and it was a huge battle to get it sorted under warranty - the dealer didn't give a toss and even threatened me when I asked for advice on-line.

So beware dodgy dealers, even main ones!

Yep, having a similar issue with a 110 from an approved dealer, 8 weeks, 2K miles and the engine has serious damage due to injectors being fitted incorrectly.
