I need something that will start and run daily and not get stuck in the mud at work.

What would you recommend? Top budget of £2000

Im on my second jimny, it's a toy car for me, green laning and train station duties.

I went out with 5 modified land drovers on Salisbury plain last week, the only thing I couldn't do was very deep water, my car is standard apart from all terrain tyres

Really simple little car, great fun.

Whereare you based, welcome to come see mine if in south

Cheers

This. I bought a (high mileage) 2004 CRV last year for just over two grand, and it has been a good reliable car.

Rav4, X-trail or Forester would all fit the bill as well.

Jimny would be good but too small as i need to carry equipment and passengers.
Going to look at a lwb pajero tomorrow, mechanic owned, so sounds ok at the moment.

Forester? Subaru? I think that would get stuck, the L200 pick up we use at work gets stuck all the time, are the rav and the x-trail any use in very muddy conditions?

Like any car an X-Trail is only as good as it's tyres. With decent rubber it'll perform better than Freelanders of the same vintage, although its not a Defender ! I've had two, both the same model albeit the current one has leather. 37 to the gallon, comfortable and capable of most things. I paid 2500 for my last one but it came with £300 of dog cage which I sold. I would think £2K would find one, but if not the 2.5 petrol is a good option if you are not doing too many miles.

Ford Maverick or Terrano as suggested above. Your budget should get you something reasonable.

I had a Maverick for two years.

Watch for, Rust in front wings above the wheel arches and also around the rear seat belt anchor points ( MOT Failure if bad )
Gave around 28mpg ( Ours was the 2.7 Diesel )

If you can go for the later facelifted ones ( Air Scoop on bonnet with Round headlights ) as the Diesel on those has an intercooler which gives a little more power, than the pre facelift with the Square Headlights and no bonnet Scoop.

Make sure tahe 4WD does actually engage as the transfer boxes can fail / get stiff with no use.

Was reasonable on road, quite car like to drive and you can run it in 2WD only on road which helps with MPG. Off road it was pretty good, I took it around Salisbury Plain with a couple of friends with Discoveries and it went everywhere theirs did apart from deep water as I had no snorkel.

I did have a set of General Grabber AT2's on it which helped with its off road ability.

Look carefully on ebay, someone that works with me in the autumn recently scrapped a Discovery with a full/new MOT for £350 because nobody wanted it. It was no show car, but knowing him the important stuff was 100%

Its not so much the MPG, its more the fact that once its on site it will be strictly a site vehicle and be running on red, I am looking at the pajero in the morning, if its not what I want I will be looking to the terranos, they are not pretty but all it has to do is trudge around site for 6 months
