Hi,

I've seen a few of these around my budget of 3.5k - 4k for a commuter car.

I would do roughly 8k a year and would be looking to get 2 years work out of it.

Is a well services example going to be hardwork maintainer wise and what are they like to do some home spanner if on?

I have also read they are pretty small inside compared to what you would expect, I presume a pram and baby stuff would fit?

Thanks in advance.

Best engine choice IMHO. The OH ran one for 3 years with no major problems, only a rear park sensor replaced under warranty.

The boot is plenty big, yes. Inside is smaller than it should be but still decent, the big electric seats and transmission tunnel don't help.

If you buy a well maintained one, there's no reason it won't run for a very long time. Buy the newest, lowest mileage one you can, post-facelift. They're heavy on bushes, so check for knocking and clonking from the suspension, ensure the 'box is quiet and shifts smoothly and freely. Jaguar insist that the ZF box is 'sealed for life', which is nonsense. If you plan to keep the car, or for piece of mind, have the gearbox oil and filter changed by a specialist at 50k-70k miles. Anywhere after that and it's risky if you ask me. Check for water ingress in the spare wheel well, I think this is a damaged boot seal or rear light seal, can't remember, but a cheap fix.

Parts and servicing are cheaper than their contemporaries, and overall reliability is good. Budget for 22-24mpg around town, with up to 34mpg on a long cruise at 70mph.

I fancy one myself after my current X-type has ran it's course, I was going to buy the wife's old one but didn't in the end.

Here it is;

I have a 4.0 V8. MPG is high 20s on a run at sensible speeds, I did see 15mpg at one point though on something a bit more high speed.

Boot is shallow but quite long, so prams etc folded flat wont be a problem, you just wont have much depth to stand anything up in. Rear seat area isnt good for anyone over about 5'8 and the drivers seat in mine is electrically adjusted, it's set so that it goes right back when the key is taken out of the ignition, but comes forward together with the steering wheel into a memory position once the key is in.

Problems I've found with mine
1) Rear window regulators, chocolate
2) Bushes, chocolate
3) Climate control valve, chocolate
4) Headlamp adjusters, chocolate

Other than that it's been alright, nice torquey feel, especially in Sport mode and sounds good when it's opened up

I have the same engine, but in the XJ8. (X350) .... These seem to be even better value than the S type (I paid 10k for mine 4 years ago, probably worth 4k tops, maybe less. The XJ8 is aluminiuim & lighter.... It goes like a rocket, and is more economical. Mid 30 's mpg is not unusual at a motorway cruise. Check out the Jsguar Forums for DIY suitability. Neither are too bad, and parts can be surprisingly cheap.

Surely the V6 diesel has to be a bit of a gem? available in six speed manual too, overdrive in top only. good on fuel, good fun too!

I have helped a friend spanner on his 4.2 S-type and found it quite a nice car to work on and as someone else said parts are pretty cheap.

He has a straight through exhaust on his which would annoy me after a while but sounds amazing

I had one for a couple of years.

Bargain motoring for me, except the fuel cost!

However this was offset by the purchase price vs a diesel.

It did have really odd tyre sizes that were very expensive. I slightly changed the spec from say 225/40 to 235/35 and saved a fortune when replacing.

Yes, they do. I had two large baby seats in the back no problem. The boot is large but shallow so unless you have one of those massive prams you'll be fine.

I have a Diesel Auto one, it's really nice, the engine is really torque.

Good on fuel but not significantly, on a run I get 40-45 (almost regardless of speed between 65-85) and 26 on short trips, so 35 in a v8 is not far off once you have taken the extra cost of fuel into account.

If I was buying again I'd get the 4.2v8 (pre 2006)

yes Good, strong engine. Reliable. As good as the diesel was, the Peugeot-Ford 2.7 lump has some well documented reliability issues. Rubber belts driving the camshafts too! Can you believe that, who would do such a thing?! <tsk> smile

I like this one, shame I'm not looking at the moment! ;

Sorry to hijack. Slightly further down the engine range, would people go for the 3.0 or 2.5?

2.5 is pointless (IMHO) hardly any more economy (loads of folk moaning about thirst on jag forums/mags) might as well get the 3.0

I'd be flamed on a non jag post (people seem to hate them) - but I think the s-type looks really good. Is the R reliable, what issues are there with the supercharged engine - I'd hope it was pretty sorted as it has been used elsewhere in the Jag range.
