My policy ends in march and with my Corsa shed about to kick the bucket it's time to look for a new (to me) car.

I had my heart set on a MK2 MR2, but the insurance quotes are coming out stupidly high, comparison sites wouldn't quote below £5000 and my current insurer, Elephant, want £6500. My next step is to try small brokers, but this started badly with Adrian flux quoting £9700.

I'm 20, BL9 postcode, licence held for 3 years and (touch wood) 3 years no claims when this policy runs out in march. I have 3 points for an SP50, but this doesn't seem to be a major factor as when I quoted with no convictions, the price dropped by a couple of hundred pounds.

I can understand if I was 17 and just passed, but I was hoping for a figure around £1500. I pay £1100 for the corsa.

I've even tried other, more sedate (read: slower) stuff and it still comes out at many thousands.

This seems to have turned into a what car unless I can find a reasonable quote. Requirements are, 1.5k budget, can probably stretch to 2k. Petrol preferable, fun, exciting and preferably RWD. Mileage is around 12-15k. No need for practicality.

Thanks in advance.

I think your main issue is post code
http://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-rat...

Plus I found it took till I was over 21 for insurance become reasonable.

Is that list still up to date? I live in a nice area but with an F* rating however the insurance on my wife's DS3 Sport + is only £150.

I'm 25 and the only quote I've ever got which I would consider reasonable was £600 on a 1.6 Ford Focus when I lived in a LS19 postcode when I was about 21.

I now have a 1.8 Grand Picasso and live in a LS10 postcode (which is considered worse) and paid £1800 last year and £900 this year.

When I was 19 it cost me £1200 to insure a 1.0 Micra.

I think insurers are much more "granular" now than blanket XX99 is F* - going down to street level. The town where I live is covered by only two post codes, eg. XX11 and XX12 and you cannot apply the same risk factor to a load of council flats in the town centre to a nice house up on the moors for example.

Ahh that's where you're wrong, insurance companies can and do do that. I speak from personal experience.

The issue is still your age.

You might have been driving for 3 years with whatever no claims but the fact is that you're still only 20. Insurance companies do not want to be insuring 20 year olds on turbo coupes. You also have points on your licence which doesn't bode well for someone your age. I have 3 points on my licence and at the age of 28, it makes the difference of about £5 on my premium.

My insurance didn't get properly "cheap" until I hit 25. I can pretty much get quotes on anything for under £700. The vast majority of cars are £3-400.

Yeah I was paying heavy £1500+ premiums for crap cars for years, when I hit 23 a DC2 was £700 on TPFT, with same price at 24 but FC. Now I'm 25 with no points and a non-fault it's £400 with any mods (bar FI) and left me with a grin for days. I've never lived in 'good' rural postcodes but always in city suburbs.

Rule of the story: Age faster.

It'll be a mixture of age, inexperience and postcode. As someone stated above, probably best wait until you're 21.

Try a Lexus IS200 Sport. RWD, LSD, only 150 odd bhp but a decent steer

Have you tried admiral? Those quotes are ridiculous: I'm 19, 1 years NCB, live in a F* postcode, and have my MK2 MR2 and Jaguar XJ6 insured for £1750 total. If I wanted to do a quote on just the MR2 I could get it for £850ish

Certainly worth a go but Admiral and Elephant are the same company and it's rare for their quotes to vary by very much.

Primarily postcode. The NW is very expensive for insurance due to the prevalence of AMCs, injury claims and fraud.

Not a lot you can do about that other than move.

All UK cars? Identical imports are usually much more expensive.

Go to a specialist sports car broker and get them to do the legwork.

You can try counterintuitive things like parking on street rather than garage, increasing the stated value of your car and saying a tracker hasn't been fitted.

I would say it is to do with the area not age. I'm the same age with only 1 years ncb and 2 accidents declared and I inusre my Clio 182 for £690. I turn 21 next month and my insurance for a Celica GTFour is £980 fully comp then. I live in NG34 which is rated B.

Thanks all for the replies. Hmm, seems it must be the postcode that's a factor. I've done some quotes as Adam Smith age 21 and the quotes hover around the £2500 mark, so maybe waiting a few (5) months is the main priority.

As said above, Admiral and elephant are in the same group of insurers, along with Bell and Diamond. Are those figures with Admiral? If you don't mind me asking smile

Yeah, as far as i'm aware they're UK, not imports. I also tested this by entering make and model rather than registration and it still come up the same.

Thanks, do you have any specific ones to try? I'll have a search tonight but wondering if you knew any to try?
