I sold my plate on ebay yesterday. The buyer has paid a deposit while I organise the transfer. He will pay the balance once the plate is on retention.

I have the form in front of me (V317). My question is, do I put myself down as the 'Grantee' until the money is paid and then transfer to his name. Or do I put the buyers details in there prior to him paying me? I am concerned I won't receive any paperwork, it will all go to him and he is then under no obligation to pay the balance. How does it all work?

I would ask for full payment. Then put his name on the retention form...

Wouldn't entertain putting it in his name without full payment.
+1 This.

once it is in new keepers name you have no recourse to get this back if buyer decides not to forward the balance....although you could easily spend a fortune on legal bills to find that out.

Surely you are always the grantee and the buyer's name goes on there as "nominee" when you pay the £25 fee to DVLA?
