A pal and I hope to participate in our first banger rally over the summer. £250 for a working car, preferably with some tax and MOT. eBay/Gumtree will be scoured nearer the time, however, in the opinion of the PH maaahhrrseeeve, would it be worth contacting used car dealers for and very cheap part exchanges?
For the amount of cash, we're really not too bothered about the actual car as long as it gets us there and the route. However, Saabs, Alfa 156 and Rover 75s seem to be just within budget...

Volvo 850 saloon - cheap, super comfortable, good performance and supremely reliable - 30mpg on a long run - in fact old volvos are the preferred choice on banger rallies from my experience

I guess though you need to weigh up how much of a challenge you want it to be - I did Home to Rome in 2006 in a 50quid volvo 360 and it's always more interesting and challenging in a car you are always worrying about whether it will make it - if it's your first rally you may want to play it safe but if you really want a challenge and to be respected by other people on the rally buy something really old and interesting e.g. austin allegro, lada riva etc

^ good advice.

It's hard to describe that nervous/excited feeling that you get when driving a absurdly cheap old car with a unknown reliability record.

The problem you will find is they won't want to sell them to you as they will still have to comply with SOGA and I wouldn't want to sell a £250 stter to a member of the public for this very reason.

Get yourself to your local auction house.

Scrap cars go for 150 ish so have to work upwards from there. Dealers may sell you a crappy part-ex car, if its 'sold as seen' or a 'trade sale' I believe they can sell whatever st they like.

If the rules are anything like the MLR500, the problem will be that the car has to be worth less than £250, and hence you cannot buy a grands worth of car cheap.

You can pay a grand for a £250 cat though.

Volvo 850, worked for us.

Ours was a modern take on an old BTCC theme http://www.amorgos.plus.com/lcs/
