Getting some work done to the M5 to get it immaculate and generally top notch, so to keep mobile, thought I'd pick up a cheap barge. Did look at Focus / Astra type stuff, but then realised I wont like it and for a few more quid I could have something more pleasant. So, I'm thinking Jag S Types look good value - say £1200 ish for a 2001 plate car with good history, TAX and MOT and the Lexus GS300 / GS430 look about the same value. I'm not too bothered about fuel consumption as I only do about 800 miles a month. Turbo Diesels I thought probably have too much to go wrong at that price level.

Any views on either, or have I missed any alternatives...i've had a BMW 523 before the M5 so thought I would try a change...

Everyone on here seems to get moist over the LS flavoured Lexus'.

You'd get a good un for that price, very cool cars imo.

I was also looking at Jags.
Ended up with a 5 series because I know a bit more about BMW's and my budget was lower than yours. But an S type is a lovely place to sit!

So where are all the good Lexus cos i cant find one. Now that my X-Type is dead i need another car - needs to be a fairly luxury car although maybe not something with a thirsty 3 lite V6!!!!!

I quite fancy a Lexus GS300. Seem to be a lot of car for very little money.

There is a very clean looking gs300 with only 47k on ebay going for a bag of sand at the moment. Perfect barge material.

If you just want to barge around and not tinker at the weekend go for a Lexii - they are very easy to live with.

Plus every time you top up the washer fluid, you can look at the engine and think "2JZ, no st!"

Thx all. Number 5, re the a type, is it by any chance a blue one on ebay at the minute in market harborough?

Don't really fancy an xj300, nice but not for me, 7 series much bigger than I need.

If you're after something a bit different and don't care about the emmpeegees, how about a Grand Cherokee?

Cherokee an interesting option, already got one 4x4 in the household though, so another may be overkill!

More than your budget but search Lexus LS400 on Ebay - there's quite a few on there.

You can't really get a non thirsty barge can you???
