Ok after much thought I have decided against buying a jaguar.
After much looking around, I have come to love the golf edition 30. I know this has been discussed before, but I really would prefer the DSG v the manual as it would be easier for me and especially my family members to drive as it has the automatic option. This is because I have only driven automatics before, although I have passed with a manual license.

Im looking at cars at around the 2008 mark with about 50-70k mileage. What do I need to look for in regards to the DSG and do you think I should just go for the manual as its going to be more problem free down the line, or in the immediate future?

Also what price should I look to pay? Ive seen one on sale at watfordvans for 9k. What do you think? http://www.watfordvans.co.uk/used_car_volkswagen_g...

Additionally as a buyer I have never brought a car privately, but would welcome any advice on what to look out for, e.g where are the vin numbers etc. Also If there is any other genuine advice you could give me as I am really paranoid after watching some programmes on car cloning etc ( you cant blame me :/).

More so, what else should I genuinely look at when going to view the edition 30? Could you recommend any similar cars. I like the s3 but they are 3k more.

Thanks.

Changes on the dsg should be smooth , down changes in drive below 4th you will start to feel engine braking. Test in manual to down change keeping revs over 2k should be smooth.
Repair is normally mechatronics if anything can now be done outside vw much cheaper. Other than that it's a manual gearbox with gears and bearings.

Buy on condition, usual hot hatch checks. Vin under windscreen on passenger side, and on vin plate under bonnet. Also check for paper sticker on boot floor. Get the engine chassis , reg numbers mot etc before you buy and get an hpi check to cross reference everything.

Mk5s rust on top of the front wheel arches, base of a pillar behind front wheel where dirt collects, .

You've clearly not done any research, hence the lack of replies. I'll therefore offer some general advice.

Do some research. There are numerous golf forums, sign up, absorb the information, learn and post. Knowledge is power.

Test drive multiple cars to learn if they "feel right"

Vin numbers will be found on the doors/inside bonnets. Get the car HPI checked if you're serious.

Learn about your chosen car, specs, faults etc. I believe cambelt and water pump should be done at 60k on the golf, however many do it around the 40k mark.

Have you considered any other cars, Cupar R, Focus St etc? Also check out the vag section of PH.

Good luck.

if l remember correctly, DSG boxes need an important oil change....and if it isn't done l, then it can cause expensive problems later - check it out in the VW/Audi section to be sure
