FSH or not as the case maybe....?
Discussion
I'm looking for another sports car and my soap box has just been dragged from the cupboard....I phoned and spoke with a seller on a car that was advertised as FSH, spoke at length with the guy (a private seller advertising his car through a specialist car website) and asked all the right questions and got all the right answers I thought. When I inspected the car's history (it is about 10 yrs old and a sports car), the history has large holes in it - am I being unreasonable to expect that when someone says 'full history' that it at least comes with a stamped service book and/or some receipts? There were all the old MOTs though the service book was missing several stamps and the important periodic 'big' items were missing the supporting paperwork with no stamps in the original service book

No, not at all. Full means FULL. Not 60%. Or some MOT certs
I hope you told him/her why you would not be making an offer

I had a similar experience when looking through the documents for a car that i had just test driven a month ago. The car was advertised with a full VW SH but the last service was due in June 2013 and it hadn't been done,.
The salesman just wouldn't accept that being 6 months overdue a service meant it didn't have a full VW service history any more. The car was well priced and drove fine but I lost all confidence in the garage and salesman at that point so walked away.

Strangely the car had all the MOT info including the old style refusal paperwork & the owner was proud of the extensive mot history! Whilst I'm not 100% OCD on my weekend cars as I'm not buying new or spending tens of thousands, it does make me realise I'm fairly fastidious when it comes to paperwork for cars & when helping friends looking, l do use the online MOT info to look at previous advisories etc & have even been known to do it sat in large dealerships to establish how well looked after a car is
My best one was when a "full service history" turned out to be (and I quote) "yeah bruv, my mate a bit of a guru wiv da toolkit and he done all da servicing, innit" from the seller.
I'd driven 60 miles to view the car. A dog eared, crap heap of an example with the wrong engine in it, an inch of black goop on the bottom of the dipstick, and a bad misfire that "couldn't be anything too bad innit, cos it done a ton ten all the way down da M1 from Leicester last night no probz".
From ten yards (and the ad pictures), it looked a minter. The reality was horrific.
I can't reproduce on a family website what I said to the guy.

current condition is far more important than an oil change missed 8 years ago
l appreciate the comments ^ , though it had some items as well on it that just added to the 'story' of 3 missing services plus 2 cambelt changes. Whilst l intend to keep the car for a few years & to service it annually regardless of its scheduled needs as it will be a low annual miles car, it needs some credible provenance IMO to start off with.Rich_W said:
Indeed.
Just don't advertise it as FSH when it's not.
Comprehensive, Some. Old MOTs are all fine alternatives
^ we are definitely 'tuned' to the same wave length....l didn't let on that the test drive was like the fast & the furious (at least the engined was up to temp by that stage Just don't advertise it as FSH when it's not.

)Annoying isn't it? I went to look at a 5yr old Fiesta Diesel at an Indy. Advert said FSH, rang ahead to ask a couple questions and to make sure car was available to view. Dealer confirmed, "yeah full service history" come on down, you won't be disappointed. When I got there the "full" service history consisted of two stamps with receipts to backup, last being 3yrs and 22k miles ago. When I asked the sales guy about it he just said, "ah right? Well we'll change the oil and filter before you pick it up.
Suffice to say I didn't do a deal.
Glad it was only a 10mile round trip from home.
