Advice Needed Please Volvo D5 or Skoda Octavia VRS Diesel
Discussion
Good afternoon all!
I am just after some advice please! I am hoping to change my car soon, and have narrowed it down to two cars.
Looking at second hand diesel either a Volvo V70 D5 Estate, or a Skoda Octavia VRS Estate.
I just wondered which is better in terms of performance, MPG, BHP ect. Any advice would be appreciated. ?
Thank you.

I ran a 54 plate V70 D5 177 BHP for a year or so, and at the time looked at the Octavia.
We wanted a van that was nice to drive, the car spent most of its time with the rear seats down. The rear squabs lift with a solid cord, the backs drop forward with a solid clunk. You get a solid flat floor and bulkhead. The car hardly notices 160 bottles of wine or 250kg of cement and bricks in the back, and cruises effortlessly.
However we hated the Geartronic with a vengeance, it barely hit 40mpg on a run (despite what the computer would say), and steering was almost as vague driving solo as when fully laden. Sister in law has a chipped manual XC70 which does 55mpg on a run, but at 150,000 miles keeps blowing bits of the turbo system. Possibly due to the performance mod?
We also looked at an Octavia, a couple of years newer for the same cash. It felt like it was made of recycled takeaway cartons and was just as disposable. Flimsy catches, the rear seat squab cover was held on with crisscrossed bungees, so any load in the back would snag on them when folded forwards.
Had I been after a fun drive for occasional load carrying, it would have been a different choice. What I should have done was get the Accord estate in manual, best of both worlds.
When I was allowed a midlife crisis earlier this year, it was a simple choice whether to keep the sturdy practical V70 or the 20+ year old 1.6 Carina hatchback. Easier to drive, cheaper to run (including fuel), and almost as practical.
