Most ambitious, yet foolish attempts at getting through flood water.

A simple idea after seeing this Audi marooned in the middle of the flooded road, no doubt thinking they could get through

Do people have any idea where the air intake is and how deep is safe for their car?
If you don't know, how deep flood would you be prepared to risk driving through?

Did anyone see the clip on the beeb news where a BMW X3 was driving along an otherwise deserted flooded street and actually indicated before turning left? Well, it was a special occasion.

I do wonder how many pics like these are taken long after somebody has driven too fast through a passable stretch of road, then the water level has risen to stupid levels once they've already abandoned it?

That.
And a car making good steady progress through water getting swamped by some selfish tt coming the other way who decided not to wait a moment and treat the flood as a contraflow.

There was footage of a car on the road to Muchelney in Somerset yesterday. Only the roof was visible - did they try and drive through when the water was that high? Er no.....

Do manufacturers list wading depth in their manuals? I know SUV's do but I don't recall seeing that in normal car manuals. I know the wading depth of my Range Rover and I looked up the wading depth of the Mitsubishi Outlander I was driving over Christmas as I needed to cross a couple of fords.

When I was younger and stupiderer, I drove my diesel Peugeot 306 through a flooded section of road. "Diesels are fine in water" I said to my then GF. A bent conrod later I discovered that water isn't compressible and that the air filter housing was inches above the ground on the nearside!

Also brings out the complete arse in some drivers. I watched a Merc ML try to push a Lupo into deep water the other day its driver was insistent he should be in the shallowest part - straddling both lanes. The Lupo driver a very elderly lady did the old lady thing and won though, just stopped where she was in her lane, but positioned more to the centre and stared straight on and held her place. ahole ML driver eventually got the message and then booted it swerving back on to his side.

A female colleague recently drove her A4 through a "puddle" which turned out to be 6 inches deep. £3000 repair bill.

Unless you're in something capable of wading in significantly deep water then DRIVE VERY SLOWLY and if the water is deep enough to reach over the bottom of your tyres (e.g start touching the wheels themselves) then it's probably a good idea to turn back.

Also, I heard a story of someone destroying their car when launching his boat into the water on a trailer, he put the back wheels of the car in the water a bit and didn't realise his fuel tank breather would suck the sea water into the tank and wreck his fuel pump.

...all these low placed devices that suck water in, anyone would think they (the manufacturers) do this deliberately wink
